University of Turku, Department of Computing has an open position for one research assistant or project researcher in scientific programming and data analysis. The preferred starting date is in June, 2021 but can be negotiated.The position is fixed-term and ends 31.5.2022. The work is full-time but part-time work is also possible based on mutual agreement.

Project The position focuses on the development and application of open data science and machine learning workflows in life sciences and computational humanities. The work provides good opportunities to familiarize with data-intensive methodological research and will be done in University of Turku under supervision of associate professor Leo Lahti (data science; Department of Computing).

Qualifications We are looking for applicants with good collaboration skills and analytical capabilities, ability to work in multidisciplinary environment. Outstanding candidates from any study phase are encouraged to apply. Programming experience or background in a methodological field is preferable (mathematics / physics / statistics / ecology / informatics / computer science, or similar). Familiarity with statistical programming, Unix/Linux, and data analysis can be considered as an advantage. Fluent communication skills in English are essential. The project can be combined with a MSc thesis, and can also provide a starting point for later doctoral studies upon a separate, independent agreement.

The qualification requirements of the position are stated in the University of Turku Rules of Procedure: https://www.utu.fi/en/university/organisation A person selected for the post of project researcher is required to have a higher university degree. The degree must be completed by the end of the application period.

The salary for a project researcher is based on levels 2-4 of the demands level chart for teaching and research staff in the salary system applied at Finnish universities, according to which the base salary for the position is 2078,27–2591,28 euro per month. The salary for a research assistant is based on level 1 according to which the base salary is 1889,69 euro per month. In addition, a performance-based salary component of min 6% and max 50 % will be paid.

A six (6) month trial period applies to the position.
