FOR THREE 4-YEAR DOCTORAL CANDIDATE POSITIONS

The positions are filled for a fixed term starting 1.8.2021 (or as agreed). Successful candidates are expected to work full time and to complete their doctorates in four years.

The successful applicant will join the HSSH research initiative Datafication of society and SSH research. This research programme brings together a multidisciplinary community of scholars to tackle the emerging potentials and problems of datafication – the increasingly intensive collection and analysis of various forms of data and its implication to society and the social sciences and humanities. We are looking for Ph.D. students who are in the beginning stages of the studies (1st year), with a prospect of working full time for the next 4 years. The duties of a doctoral candidate consist of working on his or her own doctoral thesis, completing other postgraduate studies, teaching (up to 5% of the annual working time), and other tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in a field that is relevant to the research topic and have a high quality research proposal. Applicants’ research plans should fall into the research areas described in the research programme outline. Applicants are expected to submit their research plan and an additional elaboration statement on how they see the connections between their thesis proposal and the programme outline.

Other requirements include proven ability and motivation, demonstrated through previous degree studies or otherwise, to pursue postgraduate studies and a doctoral degree according to the study plan and research proposal. Fluency in English language is required. The appointee is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki

Depending on their discipline and supervisor arrangements, doctoral candidates will be employed by one of the 5 founding faculties of HSSH (Educational Sciences, Social Sciences, Arts, Theology or Law) and they will join a relevant doctoral programme. However, the chosen group of students will be working in the HSSH, where the key staff of the research programme will be hosted.

The annual gross salary range will be approx. 29,600 – 39,000 euros, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
