Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational, and high-impact research and education. We are a community of 35,000 people and Finland’s second largest multidisciplinary higher-education institution. Our competitive edges are in technology, health, and society. Read more.

We are inviting applications for tenure track positions in the Unit of Computing Sciences at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences. We currently employ 24 professors, 17 tenure track professors, 44 full time teachers. Our 400 staff members work on three campuses in Tampere and Pori. The unit of Computing Sciences covers all essential areas of Information Technology. We develop methods, theories, and technologies for digitalized data and information centric society. Common to all our fields are strong mathematical, algorithmic, and computational thinking and understanding of social networks and human-computer interaction. Software engineering, signal processing, computer engineering and information security are solution-oriented disciplines, and data science seeks to build models and extract meaningful information from large amounts of complex data. Machine learning, artificial intelligence and data-driveness cut across all our disciplines.

We have about 200 research projects mainly led by the professors totaling over 20Meur annual external funding. We create 600 publications at top journals and conferences. Examples of our highlights can be found at our research pages. We have over 2000 students enrolled every year and educate majority of Tampere University’s mathematics and software engineering students also for other faculties. Our study programs are available at our teaching page.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS

Our tenure track professors are expected to pursue and supervise scientific research in their field; lead, conduct and develop research-led teaching, curriculum development and student supervision; seek, secure and manage research funding from different sources, such as EU instruments; demonstrate effective academic leadership and engage with external stakeholders.

In response to Tampere University as a major interdisciplinary university in Finland, the Computing Sciences Unit is strengthening its cross-disciplinary profile. The new positions described below aim at both extend the existing expertise in the unit as well as widen its scope of future research with new openings into promising, leading edge areas. The new members are welcomed to strengthen our academic and industrial collaborations at both European and global levels.

Software Engineering (2 positions)

The focus of our research is in software engineering and applications, including areas ranging from architecture and quality to management of software engineering. Read more about the research group from here.  As the importance of data, its analysis, use and sharing become increasingly important, the way software is developed is changing. This requires new research on development practices, architectures, enabling technologies and business. Thus, we want to increase our strength in data-oriented applications and software aspects of AI.

When AI – especially machine learning - is used in software-intensive systems, “traditional” software is still critical in building the whole system.  New research is needed to react to these changes. AI also brings new opportunities to significantly improve the efficiency of software development, and we want to extend our research to this direction in collaboration with our colleagues in the machine learning research groups.

Our teaching and research are typically conducted in collaboration with industry and, thus we expect the candidates to understand in challenges from the industry point of view, too. Ability to actively involve the local companies to international research collaborations is appreciated.

The selected candidates should operate at both Tampere and Pori campuses

Signal Processing and Machine Learning (2 positions)

The Computing Science unit has been the site of several Academy of Finland Centres of Excellence in Signal Processing and has made pioneering contributions in all areas of signal processing. Its current core strengths are in imaging, audio processing, computer vision, and applied machine learning.  Our staff includes world-class scientists, ERC grantees, Academy professors, and editors of the top international journals.

To support our growth and sustain our competitiveness and diversity, we are looking for talented and enthusiastic candidates to fill two new positions in the broader area of Signal Processing and Machine Learning, including Image Processing and Computational Imaging, Computer Vision, Audio and Speech Processing, and Multimedia. Applicants are encouraged to pursue an ambitious yet realistic research plan and contribute with high-quality teaching within this area.

Complex systems (1 position)

In the Complex System researcher, complex phenomena, such as pandemics, climate change, financial crises, or computer security are analyzed, modelled, and predicted. The unit of Computing Sciences has wide scope covering many areas spanned by Complex Systems research: Statistical Data Analysis, Statistics, Data Science, Control Theory, Inverse Problems, Pure Mathematics, Machine Learning, Signal Processing, and Computer Science in general. This position on Complex Systems will strengthen the multidisciplinary nature of the unit.

We are looking for a computationally orientated candidate with expertise at least in one of the complex systems topics, especially in complex adaptive systems or complex networks. Candidate’s research can be exploratory and data-driven and/or model-based with various application areas, such as social sciences, computer science, economics, health, biology, or climate research. Applicants are encouraged to pursue an ambitious yet realistic research plan, emphasizing methodological, applied, and multidisciplinary aspects of their research.
