POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER (Materials characterization)

The position starts on August 16th, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter, for a fixed term until December 31st, 2023.

Qualifications we are looking for

The tasks of the experimentally oriented Postdoctoral Researcher are connected to the Catch the Carbon R&I programme of Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Finland and its “HiiletIn” project coordinated by Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke). University of Jyväskylä is responsible of work package 3 of “HiiletIn” project with a title "New methods for understanding carbon capture processes". In this WP we utilize imaging and analysis techniques to investigate carbon stabilization mechanisms. Mainly two techniques are applied, helium ion microscopy with secondary ion mass spectrometry (HIM-SIMS) and X-ray microtomography (µ-CT). In HIM-SIMS isotopic labelling of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen will be an important part of the project. This work will be carried out in close collaboration with Laboratory of stable isotopes of Department of Environment and Biology.

You are the person we are looking for if you have, or are about to obtain, a suitable degree (a PhD or equivalent) and have background in physics, chemistry, biology or equivalent. The candidate is expected to have very good experimental skills and preferably prior experience and expertise in using imaging and material analysis techniques. In particular, experience in Helium Ion Microscopy, Electron microscopy, or X-ray microscopy techniques is an advantage. Additionally, we appreciate knowledge of biological processes related to carbon cycle of plants.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of a postdoctoral researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. A good command of English is required and a proficiency to teach in English will be considered beneficial. The PhD degree required for the position must have been completed before starting the position.

The annual salary range will be approximately 40,000 EUR (gross income, including holiday bonus), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.
