Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our universities community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en

Applications are invited for a full-time fully funded PhD student position or to a master’s degree position related to fabrication of vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) and high-speed photodiodes for emerging cryogenic applications in quantum and classical computing.

Photonics is a leading research area at the Tampere University, with a dynamic community covering all aspects from fundamental theoretical research, to technology, and industrial and consumer applications.  The research will be carried out at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) group. ORC is one of the leading optoelectronics research groups in Europe with more than 30 years of activity centered on the development of novel optoelectronic devices, such as laser diodes or high efficiency solar cells. Our vision is powered by integration of multidisciplinary research in material science, new photonics technologies, and related applications, and is fueled by a rather large portfolio of national, EU and industrial projects. Job description

The Doctoral Researcher / Research Assistant position focuses on development of fabrication processes for cryogenic optoelectronic components and their characterization. Activities are linked to preparing low energy per bit optical links to cryogenically operated quantum and classical computers. Besides design activity, the position involves hands on work in cleanroom to prepare relevant VCSEL and photodiode components. This involves working with different kind of lithography, etching and deposition methods, among others. Most of the work is carried out using state-of-the-art facilities available at Tampere University, but also collaboration with international partners. The job is linked to research projects aCryComm (https://www.acrycomm.eu/) and SuperQuant (starting in 2021).

Requirements

The position is intended for recently graduated MSc -students pursuing carrier towards PhD. Alternatively we offer possibility for a student that is looking for place to make his/her Master’s Thesis and has ability to work full time on this topic. You should have a MSc degree in physics, photonics or a related subject area. For the position of a Research Assistant it is preferred, that you are in the final stage of your MSc studies. We expect a competence to pursue independent scientific work and adequate technical skills. You should be fluent in spoken and written English, versatile person with  good study records but no prior experience from field is required. Previous experience and understanding on semiconductor fabrication, optoelectronics, computer aided design and modelling, and chemistry is however a benefit. The task of Doctoral Researcher includes 5 % of other teaching tasks.

We offer

The position of Doctoral Researcher will be filled for a fixed-term period of 2 years and the position of Research Assistant will be filled for a fixed-term of 8 months.
