The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is the only institution of higher education in Finland to train veterinarians. It has about 750 undergraduate and postgraduate students and employs about 150 academic staff, which is about a half of the total staff number. The degree programmes have been accredited in accordance with the European System of Evaluation of Veterinary Training (ESEVT). The Faculty has four departments (Food Hygiene and Environmental Health, Equine and Small Animal Medicine, Production Animal Medicine, Veterinary Biosciences) and Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Veterinary Teaching Hospital is an essential part of research and teaching environment for clinical veterinary science.

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER

The appointment is for 2 years, with a possibility of extension. A preferred starting date is 1 February 2022. The position will be filled with a 6 months probationary period.

The appointment is at the Department of Food Hygiene and Environmental Health, in the Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AHR) research team, led by Prof. Raimo Pohjanvirta. AHR is well-known as the critical mediator of toxicity of dioxins and related environmental contaminants. This project, however, will focus on the mechanisms by which AHR participates in the physiological regulation of body weight and energy balance. The planned research includes whole-animal studies in novel transgenic mouse models as well as in vitro studies. The team has collaborators in Canada and Estonia.

The appointee will perform research in the project. The appointee may also supervise students and participate in other discipline-specific teaching. Teaching tasks can account for up to 5 % of the annual working time.

Requirements and expectations

The applicant must have a PhD degree in a relevant discipline. Expertise in working with laboratory animals, especially mice, is necessary. Previous experience in molecular biological methods and/or cell culture studies is a major asset. Fluent communication skills in English and ability to work in an international team setting are expected. The postdoctoral researcher will mostly work in liaison with a doctoral student already hired to this project.

Salary and benefits

The salary is based on the salary system of the Finnish universities. The monthly salary in a full time postdoctoral researcher position is usually about 3 300–3 600 €) depending on applicant’s qualifications and experience.
