The North changes the world – we at the University of Oulu work as part of the international science community to produce new scientific information and science-based solutions. We are committed to educate future pioneers to build a more sustainable, intelligent and humane world. Creating new, taking responsibility and succeeding together are values that build a strong foundation for all our actions. We offer a working environment where individuals can cultivate their skills, do meaningful work, and develop professionally. Our university's several specialized research and service units enable extensive and diverse development and career opportunities for experts in various fields.

Infotech Oulu Institute is one of the four strategic focus institutes at the University of Oulu supporting high-quality research, coordinating multidisciplinary research activities and doctoral training. Infotech’s science-based expertise meets global challenges determined in the strategy of the University of Oulu (UO) in the focus area” Digitalization and smart society” exploring how digitalization can work for everyone. The research topics include sensing and ubiquitous wireless sensor systems, wireless communication, and other novel services and systems. The research targets future information infrastructures and integrates aspects of technology adoption by complex human groups, communities, and societies.

We are now hiring a

Doctoral Student and a

Postdoctoral Researcher

to work in MAALI, an Infotech research project led by Assistant Professor Miguel Bordallo López and Professor Olli Silvén, CMVS research unit, at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering.

The faculty, the research group and the research project

The positions are located at the Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis (CMVS), Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE) and in the 6G-Flagship ecosystem.

CMVS has achieved ground-breaking research results in many areas of its activity, including texture analysis, facial image analysis, 3D computer vision, energy-efficient architectures for embedded systems, and biomedical engineering. Among the highlights of its research are the Local Binary Pattern (LBP) methodology, LBP-based face descriptors, and methods for geometric camera calibration, which all are highly-cited and widely used around the world. The areas of application for CMVS's current research include affective computing, perceptual interfaces for human computer interaction, biometrics, augmented reality, and biosignal analysis.

6G Flagship is the world's first and leading 6G research, development, and innovation ecosystem coordinated by the University of Oulu, and appointed by the Academy of Finland, a governmental funding agency for high-quality scientific research. Research in 6G Flagship is organised into four interrelated strategic research areas where scientific breakthroughs are sought in the development of fundamental technology components for 6G systems.

The MAALI project investigates the creation of an intelligent autonomous multi-sensory stratified system to support assisted living. The research involves technologies that will aid early diagnosis, and monitoring of activity changes for the ageing people living at home. The objective is to impact the automation of a range of assisted living and healthcare needs by employing pattern recognition across a network of low-cost networked sensors in a home environment. The project aims to enhance existing assistive technologies by providing the capability to automatically monitor and reason over activity and vital signs data and communicate these data to support actors in case of emergency. The sensors inform each other about activities in the household and aim to extract the best possible information at each instant of time by employing signal processing and artificial intelligence methods.
