We are now looking for a two-year fixed-term postdoctoral research fellow (plus possible one-year extension) to carry out research in POEMS research project, hosted by the Space and political Agency Research Group (SPARG), located in the Faculty of Management and Business

The project “The politics of embodied encounters in asylum seeking” (POEMS) studies encounters between asylum seekers, the migration regime, and societies that host refugees. The project is divided into three Research Tasks: analysis of European Union and Finnish asylum policies (RT1), the study of embodied encounters in asylum application process (RT2), and an ethnographic study of experiences of personhood in everyday encounters (RT3).

Job description

The postdoctoral research fellow will mainly work in the third Research Task (RT3) of POEMS, which focuses on mundane encounters between asylum seekers and local people. The appointment as a postdoctoral research fellow will be made for a term of two years (plus possible one-year extension). The postdoctoral research fellow is expected to produce a rich set of ethnographic materials related to mundane encounters between asylum seekers and local people, so as to gain in-depth understanding about how experiences of being encountered as a person in everyday contexts is connected with capacities to agency. Based on this analysis the researcher will introduce the results in international conferences and produce research papers for international journals, in collaboration with other POEMS researchers. The duties will also include active participation in the activities of SPARG, and limited amount of teaching in English to be agreed upon separately (no more than 5% of annual work time).

Requirements

An eligible candidate is expected to hold a doctoral degree from a relevant field and have a track record of international scholarly activity, showing capacity to independent research work. Suitable doctoral degrees include human geography, sociology, anthropology, migration studies, or other fields relevant to the research themes of POEMS project. Additionally, some experience of teaching in higher education is required.

The successful candidate’s own research interests, as expressed in a Plan of intent, may include methodological and/or theoretical themes that complement or bring in new perspectives to the RT3, or POEMS in general. Previous experience of ethnographic work with asylum seekers and/or refugees will be considered an advantage. Moreover, experience of life in Finland or in other Nordic societies, as well as skills in languages spoken by major asylum seeker groups in Finland (Arabic, Dari/Farsi, Somali) will be considered an advantage but not required. We expect candidates to demonstrate a strong level of motivation and commitment to POEMS and a good level of English language.

When evaluating candidates, we will consider the following criteria:

  • The alignment of your research profile and ideas with the goals of POEMS project.
  • The feasibility of your Plan of intent and its potential from the point of view of POEMS.
  • Your track record of international scholarly activity.

We offer

The postdoctoral research fellow will be hired for a fixed term of two years. The start date will be 1 September 2022, or as mutually agreed between the parties. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System. The position of a postdoctoral research fellow is placed at job demand level 5-6 (the demand level chart for the teaching and research staff).
