Machine Listening Group at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences is looking for candidates at doctoral and postdoctoral levels. The group is doing research on computational methods for the analysis and processing of soundscapes, using deep learning for sound event classification and detection, sound localization, and audio captioning. The group is actively involved in DCASE Challenge for pushing forward the development of cutting-edge methods for analysis of environmental audio. 

Job description

The main research topics for the positions to be filled are Sound event detection and classification and Automatic audio captioning. For sound event detection, different tasks to be studied include for example use of weak and noisy labels, feature learning, and transfer learning. For audio captioning, tasks to be studied include use of textual labels for grounding the captioning process, annotation and subjective evaluations with different segments of users. 

Requirements

Requirements (for Doctoral Researcher): The candidate should have an MSc degree in related subjects such as signal processing, machine learning or mathematics, with an excellent academic track record. Candidates should have experience in using Python and be proficient in oral and written English. Successful candidates are expected to pursue a doctoral degree at Tampere University. Full-time doctoral studies are expected to be completed in four years. More information on the admission process and requirements is available here .

Requirements (for Postdoctoral Research Fellow): The candidate should have a PhD degree, knowledge and research experience and a solid publication track in relation to the described research areas. We expect a competence to pursue independent scientific work and adequate teaching skills, proficiency in oral and written English, experience in academic publishing, good interpersonal skills, and ability to supervise M.Sc. and PhD students. Use of Python for machine learning.

We offer

Doctoral Researcher positions will be filled for a fixed-term period of 2 years, with a possibility to be extended up to 4 years. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow position will be filled for a fixed-term period of 2 years.

The planned starting date is January 2022 or as mutually agreed. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on the job requirements and the employee's performance following the Finnish University Salary System. The position of a Doctoral Researcher is placed on the job demand levels 2-4 and for Postdoctoral Research Fellow on levels 5-6. A typical starting salary for a Doctoral Researcher is around 2400€ per month and for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow around 3400€ per month.

Informaatioteknologian ja viestinnän tiedekunnan Konekuuloryhmä (Machine Listening Group) etsii yhtä tutkijatohtoria ja kahta väitöskirjatutkijaa. 

Konekuuloryhmä on osa tietotekniikan yksikköä Tampereen yliopistolla, ja osa laajempaa audion tutkimusryhmää (Audio Research Group). Ryhmän tutkimus keskittyy ympäristöäänien sisältöpohjaiseen analyysiin keskittyen luonnolliseen kieleen. Tämä sisältää tutkimusaiheita kuten akustisen maiseman ja äänitapahtuminen luokittelu, äänitapahtumien tunnistus, sekä manuaalinen ja automaattinen äänen nimeäminen.

Tietotekniikan yksikkö Tampereen yliopistolla on monimuotoinen ja kansainvälinen yksikkö, jonka keskeiset tutkimusalueet signaalinkäsittelyssä ovat kuva-, video- ja audiosignaalien käsittely ja analyysi sekä koneoppimiseen liittyvät aiheet.

Tärkeimmät tutkittavat tutkimusaiheet täytettävissä työtehtävissä ovat äänitapahtumien tunnistus ja luokittelu, mukaan lukien menetelmät, jotka käyttävät heikosti tai kohinaisesti annotoitua materiaalia sekä menetelmät jotka käyttävät ominaisuusoppimista, sekä äänisignaalin sisällön automaattinen kuvaus käyttäen luonnista kieltä.
