At Varjo we create hardware and software experiences to fulfill our vision of immersive computing. The mixed reality experiences we are creating will empower each of us to be more creative and more productive.

We are offering you an exciting position where you can see into the future and play your part in shaping it. When we are done, computers will look nothing like what they do right now.

Job description

We at Varjo build mixed reality devices that are capable of digitising their environment and software solutions that allow sharing it across the world to multiple users. You can learn more about our vision and what we are doing right now at https://varjo.com/blog/varjo-reality-cloud/.  While visual experience is key, so is aural.  When you Teleport into the physical environment of another user sound sources should play back realistically with respect to your own movement.  This also means that the aural environment of the user capturing the environment has to be modelled accurately.  We are looking for an audio engineer to lead our end-to-end audio pipeline development from spatial capturing in cloud to streaming to pose-aware playback.

You are familiar with both mobile microphone solutions for speech capture as well as multi-microphone solutions for spatial capture.  You know the existing state-of-the-art in spatial audio technologies and know what type of data hardware DSPs produce and how to integrate them with the latest software solutions.  You have built audio pipelines from microphones to playback and know how they are integrated with visual pipelines and encoded and streamed in a low-latency fashion over the internet - in sync with video.  We are dealing with capture devices that know their pose - location and orientation - and you know just the tricks to make most use of this.

In mixed reality applications the final environment is a combination of virtual and physical.  Extra brownie points if you have developed techniques where virtual content affects audio transmission!

This is a full-time position located in Helsinki, Finland. Even though our office is in Helsinki, you can do your work mostly remotely in Finland.  There is the occasional need to come to the office to evaluate various hardware, but apart from that you are free to choose where you work.

If you're based somewhere else at the moment, we will also gladly help with relocating to Finland and make your move to the capital of the world's happiest and cleanest country as easy as possible.

  • Take accountability for solutions that are modular and testable. Have pride for building unit and regression testing to prove that your code and solutions truly work.
  • Work closely with hardware and other software engineering teams on tech selections and solutions.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience in spatial audio capture and playback technologies and libraries.  You know what works and when.
  • Experience in synchronising audio with video and streaming it efficiently.
  • You can write software digital signal processors whenever the existing solutions don't quite get you there.
  • Experience in mixed reality solutions where also the virtual content affects audio reproduction is a plus.
  • Fluent in C/C++ with over 4 years of experience as primary CPU language
  • Track record of shipping working code and solutions based on your contributions
  • Team player, ability to perform in cross functional teams and to share knowledge to others
