Applications are invited for a full-time

Doctoral Student position

for a four-year period and is scheduled to be filled as of March 1, 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. A trial period of six months is applied in the position. Research is supervised by Adjunct Professor Jussi-Pekka Jansson in the Circuits and Systems (CAS) research unit, Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. The doctoral student position is related to project funded by the Academy of Finland.

Research area

A time-to-digital converter (TDC) measures the time interval between two or more timing signals and presents the result in a digital form. The operation is much similar to the analogue-to-digital converters but the measured quantity is time interval instead of analogue voltage. High precision TDCs are utilized in many applications such as measurement devices, high energy experiments in physics, high speed circuit characterization, telecommunication, medical imaging, optical spectroscopy and laser based imaging and ranging. The CAS research unit has a successful history in developing the state-of-the art TDC units for various applications.

Job description

The main task of this doctoral student position is the development of a new multi-channel, high precision CMOS TDC architecture. The target applications are in pulsed laser based sensing, imaging and optical spectroscopy. The target precision is

The place of work is CAS Research Unit, University of Oulu, headed by Professor Timo Rahkonen. CAS research unit is famous of integrated laser scanners and digital time-of-flight circuits and applications for example time-resolving Raman spectroscopy. In addition, CAS has solid experience in optoelectronic circuits and especially RF electronics and RFIC design.

Requirements

To successfully occupy the position of a doctoral student, the candidate must

  • Possess a Master’s degree or an equivalent degree (e.g. licentiate) preferably in electrical engineering. Degree must have been completed with good grades by 31.1.2022 (or latest before the job contract starts).
  • In addition, knowledge in integrated circuit design is required. Practical experience of analog electronics or digital electronics design is seen as an advantage.
  • Ability to pursue independent research and excellent writing and fluency in English is expected.
  • The doctoral student position is intended for an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) who, according to the ”European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers”, is defined as a researcher in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of his/her research activity, including the period of research training. Applicants will be either starting their doctoral training or will have completed no more than two full years of training (adjusted for possible previous part-time status) at the time the position is filled.

The selected candidate will carry out his/her doctoral studies in the Information Technology and Electrical Engineering Doctoral Programme of the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS) and must meet the minimal requirements to receive doctoral study rights as defined in http://www.oulu.fi/uniogs/requirements_for_admission.

What we offer

  • Sports, culture and wellness benefits and salary payments for 12 months / year. The successful candidate will receive full benefits provided by the University of Oulu to university employees, including free time corresponding to holidays and free occupational health care services.
  • Salary is in accordance with the Finnish universities salary system for teaching and research personnel level 2-4. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50% of the job-specific component). The typical starting salary for a doctoral student is approx. 2500 euros/month (before taxes).

Application

Applications must be submitted using the electronic application form by 31.1.2022, 23:59 (Finnish local time). The application should be written in English and include the following:

1. Complete CV containing contact information of at least two referees

2. Motivation letter (maximum 1 page) describing prior knowledge and research interests and career plans

3. Certificates/Diplomas: Scanned electronic copies of diplomas and transcripts of the records of relevant previous degrees. If the original documents are not in English or Finnish, each document must be accompanied by an official certified translation into English or Finnish.
