Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our universities community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en

We are seeking new Doctoral Researchers (PhD Students) to our computer vision and machine learning research.

The research work at Tampere University will be supervised by the Associate Professor Esa Rahtu. The application will also collaborate closely with the video coding team at Nokia Technologies in Tampere. We work broadly in the fields of computer vision and machine learning. We are pursuing research problems in geometric computer vision (including topics such as visual SLAM, visual-inertial odometry, and 3D scene reconstruction), in semantic computer vision (including topics such as image-based localization, object detection and recognition, and deep learning), video and image processing (compression), and statistical machine learning (Gaussian processes).

Job description

The positions will offer excellent opportunities to work in a team of professionals responsible for developing cutting edge computer vision and machine learning technology and allows you to learn many aspects from fundamental research problems to concrete applications while pursuing your PhD thesis.

These positions are part of a joint project with Nokia Technologies, where we develop deep neural network approaches for video coding. We are interested in compression methods where the output is mainly aimed for machine consumption instead of humans. Such approaches are increasingly important due to the emerge of new computer vision-based systems, e.g., in autonomous driving and robotics.

Successful candidates must be pursuing or will be accepted to study towards a doctoral degree in the doctoral programme of the discipline. Please visit  our admissions webpage for more information on eligibility requirements.

Requirements

We are especially seeking candidates with the following research interest:

  • Neural Network based video coding
  • Video Coding for machines

Ideal candidate has previous knowledge in machine learning, video or image coding, or computer vision. Experience in (or strong will to learn) programming with Python or C++/Java are considered as advantages.

You need to have a Master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science or a related field and have demonstrated (during your studies towards the Master’s degree or otherwise) the competence and motivation to pursue postgraduate studies. Your degree needs to be completed the latest before starting at the position. Please be prepared to provide proof of your merits when requested.

Candidates are selected based on the level of promise that they show, and this will be evaluated based on their study and research plans, their previous success in studies, and merits in writing the Doctoral thesis and / or scientific publishing.

Tampere University is a unique, multidisciplinary, and boldly forward-looking, evolving community. Our values are openness, diversity, responsibility, courage, critical thinking, erudition building, and learner-centeredness. We hope that you can embrace these values and promote them in your work.

We offer

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of one year. The starting date of the positions will be negotiated individually. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Doctoral Researcher is placed on level 2—4 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researchers is approximately 2400 € /month and it will increase during the studies depending on the progress (up to 3400 € per month).

We offer a wide range of staff benefits, such as occupational health care, flexible working hours, excellent sports facilities on campus and several restaurants and cafés on campus with staff discounts. Please read more about working at Tampere University.

We are inviting you to be a part of a vibrant, active, and truly international research community. We value interdisciplinarity, as it allows you to expand your research network and exposes you to new perspectives and ideas to solve complex research problems and pursue novel research findings. We are strongly committed to the highest level of scientific research and the provision of high-quality doctoral education.

Finland has been assessed to be among the best countries in the world with respect to many quality of life indicators, including being the overall #1 country in human wellbeing. Finland is among the leading countries in ICT & Digitalization, from 5G networks to financial technology, artificial intelligence and AR/VR innovations to IoT, digital education and health solutions.
