The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (ENS) is a leading research institution in nanoscience in Finland and hosts a well-equipped cleanroom dedicated to nanofabrication. The Metaplasmonics group has access to state-of-the-art optical spectroscopy and microscopy setups, a wide range of simulations tools, and a broad academic network in the field of nanophotonics. 

The Metaplasmonics group has been engaged in advanced nanophotonics, plasmonics, and metamaterials.  The group has recently expanded its interest to encompass research on metasurface-based devices.

Job description

We are now looking for a Ph.D. student for developing metasurface-based devices. The work comprises the fabrication and integration of metasurface, and optical characterization of the components and device. The position is supervised by Prof. Humeyra Caglayan and Dr. Peinan Ni, and is placed at the Laboratory of Photonics within the Physics Unit of ENS.

Requirements

We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic candidates who have successfully completed a scientific university degree (master's or equivalent) either in optics and photonics, physics, electrical engineering, or related subjects. Previous experience in the following areas is beneficial: nanofabrication techniques, metasurfaces, semiconductors, nanophysics, plasmonics. The applicant should also be willing to carry out nanofabrication and optical experiments.

The position also requires:

  • Good English language skills (spoken and written)
  • Ability to conduct systematic scientific research
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate clearly in a multidisciplinary and international environment

We offer

The positions will be filled for a fixed-term period of a maximum of 3– 4 years. The starting date will be mutually agreed upon. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for a Doctoral Researcher is around 2400 - 2500 EUR per month. The salary increases based on experience.
