Interested in working around smart people with topics that will boost up your technological expertise and guarantee a bright future in industry? If yes, keep on reading!

The Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Systems research group and the Power Electronics research group in the unit of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences, Tampere University are seeking new master thesis workers. The research group of Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Systems works in the research area of renewable energy systems and their connection to the electric grid. We utilise measurements of our photovoltaic power research plant which comprises a comprehensive weather measurement system together with advanced electrical measurements. The research group of Power Electronics focuses on different power-electronics applications such as renewable-energy and energy-storage systems.

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are looking for smart and motivated people to work with the following topics.

The first topic is related to the variable nature of wind and photovoltaic power production. Variations in the power generated by wind turbines and photovoltaic generators can be smoothed by energy storage systems. One of the goals is to develop guidelines for sizing and control of energy storage systems used with wind and photovoltaic power plants.

The second topic is related to grid integration of photovoltaic power plants. As the share of grid-connected photovoltaic power production capacity increases, there is a growing potential for photovoltaic output power variability having negative effects on the reliability and power quality. These effects can be alleviated using energy storage systems.

The third topic is related to stability issues of grid-connected systems. All electrical loads connected to a grid generate and absorb reactive power. As the loads typically vary over time with many parameters, the reactive power balance in a grid varies as well. As a result, the voltage variations in the grid may become unacceptably large, and even a voltage collapse may occur. A static compensator (STATCOM) is an important technology controlling the reactive power in response to voltage variations, thus supporting the grid stability. The tasks in this topic include, for example, comparison of different STATCOM topologies, integration of energy storages as a part of a STATCOM application, and active power control based on power system needs.

The fourth topic is related to lithium-ion batteries. The combustion-engine cars will soon be replaced by electric cars, and there is an upcoming revolutionary period of batteries in many other areas as well. In our research group we are studying the dynamics of the batteries trying to develop methods with which the battery quality can be efficiently analyzed. One of the goals is to develop real-time methods with which the battery quality can be defined online, for example, in an electric car.

REQUIREMENTS

We value your smartness, motivation, and skills to learn new things. In this regard, we greatly appreciate your success and grades in your previous studies. We also greatly value your sense of humour and positive attitude. Extra credits are given if you are interested and motivated to pursue postgraduate studies after your master’s degree.

You need to have completed most of your studies towards master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science or a related field. Candidates are selected based on the level of promise that they show, and this will be evaluated based on their previous success in studies, and other merits. Please, be prepared to provide proof of your merits when requested.

Tampere University is a unique, multidisciplinary, and boldly forward-looking, evolving community. Our values are openness, diversity, responsibility, courage, critical thinking, erudition/ Bildung, and learner-centredness. We hope that you can embrace these values and promote them in your work.

WE OFFER

The positions will be filled for a fixed-term period of 6–9 months. The starting date of the positions will be negotiated individually. A trial period applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Master Thesis worker (Research Assistant) is placed on level 1 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for Master Thesis workers is approximately 2200 EUR/month.

We offer a wide range of staff benefits, such as occupational health care, flexible working hours, excellent sports facilities on campus and several restaurants and cafés on campus with staff discounts. Please read more about working at Tampere University.

We are inviting you to be a part of a vibrant, active, and truly international research community. We value interdisciplinarity, as it allows you to expand your research network and exposes you to new perspectives and ideas to solve complex research problems and pursue novel research findings. We are strongly committed to the highest level of scientific research and the provision of high-quality doctoral education and want to offer the support to create a bright future in academy/industry.
