We are now looking for Senior Prototype Developer to join our team working for a better future. 

Wärtsilä Voyage Rapid Innovation Team is focused on designing new products and services, which are based on real-life onboard and onshore experiences. They are tested and evaluated together with customers before starting the fully committed R&D work. Our cross-competence team uses evidence-based design methods to create and validate hypotheses that will lead us to feasible service and product prototypes.
We work on forward-looking development projects, which will help shape the marine industry; One day, you might work on concepts around autonomous shipping and the next day deep dive into paperless vessels. As part of our team, you’ll be building on top of each other’s ideas, experiment fearlessly with technology and seek to understand the bigger picture. The position is offered on a permanent basis and the successful candidate will be based in Helsinki, Finland.

What will you be doing?

As a Senior Prototype Developer, you work in a cross-competence team providing technical expertise to the team. Responsibilities can be divided into three main categories:
1.    Understanding and digesting existing systems and how they can be utilized or further developed
2.    Designing new features to existing system or creating completely new architectures
3.    Proving new concepts and designs by implementing prototypes to different levels of maturity
We work within full Wärtsilä Voyage product scope and often even beyond that. Implementation technologies are as varying as are the products. In this position you need solid experience on several different implementation technologies and environments, and good attitude towards learning new technology and development environments. And more importantly you embrace learning by doing. 
Prototype development is iterative, and we don’t always get it right the first time. Depending on the project the prototypes we make end up with different maturity level and we must always think what is the most important thing that the prototype must have and what can be left to the next phase. As Senior Prototype Developer you should enjoy constant changes in direction and be able imagine somewhat incomplete solutions as complete.
We are a cross-competence team where people usually look at the same thing from different perspectives and communicating your point of view is important. We also have a lot of communication with product teams and customers, so good communication skills both spoken and written.

You will shine in this role if you have:

• 5+ years software development experience
• Experience in more than one development environments and technologies. Some examples:

           o    Frontend tech: React, WebGL
           o    Programming languages: Javascript, CSS, Python, Rust, C, C#, Java
           o    Operating systems: Linux, Windows
           o    Development environments: VSCode with Azure and Microsoft Edge DevTools extensions, Unity
           o    Software packaging: Docker, Kubernetes
           o    Cloud stack: Azure

• Ability and willingness to learn new things on the fly
• Inquisitive mind to understand how stuff works
• Ability to work in agile way and openness to new ways of working
• Ability to prioritize the work that is currently needed to take the prototype to the next level
• Good communication skills
• Any prior experience in marine industry
