Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Jyväskylä is seeking to recruit:

two postdoctoral researchers (philosophy)

for a fixed-term period of 1.2.2023-31.5.2024 (or as agreed).

Duties and requirements

The positions are allocated to the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy and to a project funded by the Academy of Finland: Asymmetric Encounters: Intersubjectivity and the Sense of Boundaries. Making use of research in philosophy, psychoanalysis, and developmental psychology, the project engages in an inquiry into interpersonal experience – particularly, into the sense of mutuality, reciprocity, sharing, and otherness – and challenges the premise that human interaction takes place between unambiguously differentiated individuals.

The main task of the to-be-recruited postdoctoral researchers is to conduct research on the dynamic nature of the self/other relationship. The applicants’ research plans are expected to focus on one or more of the following questions:

(1)  How is the self/other distinction experientially achieved?

(2)  What kind of tensions are involved in this process?

(3)  How are these tensions reflected in social interaction?

The applicants are primarily expected to have a Ph.D. degree in the field of philosophy (e.g., philosophy of mind, philosophy of emotions, phenomenology, or social ontology), but other suitable academic backgrounds will also be taken into consideration. In any case, strength in theoretical-conceptual analysis is required. Interdisciplinary expertise across fields relevant to the project (e.g., philosophy, psychoanalysis and/or developmental psychology) will be considered as an asset.

Besides research, the applicants are expected to take part in the internal research seminar of the project and to the planning and organizing of scientific meetings. The primary place to conduct the research is Jyväskylä.

The candidates are expected to conduct research on high international level, and a good command of English is required for this position. The duties and qualification requirements for the position of the Postdoctoral Researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations, Rector’s decision on personnel matters and language skills guidelines. The qualification requirements should be met by the closing of the application time.
