The Department of Biological and Environmental Science is currently seeking to recruit candidates to the position of

DOCTORAL RESEARCHER in CELL AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

for a fixed-term from January 2, 2023, or as agreed, until August 31, 2026.

Within the Academy of Finland research project "Ecology of bacteriophages in mucosa during vertebrate host lifespan" we are looking for a highly motivated doctoral researcher with demonstrated experience in microbiology (bacteria and/or viruses) to pursue their doctoral studies at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland.

The project will explore how the mucosal environment influences bacteriophage infectivity and the bacterial resistance mechanisms against phages, and how age-associated changes in mucosal surfaces influence phage-mucosa interaction. Model pathogens used in these experiments are Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus mutans and Flavobacterium columnare. The Doctoral candidate will perform phage-bacterium interaction studies in laboratory using traditional microbiological methods and in vitro cell cultures, and in vivo, using a zebra fish model. Basic skills in microbiological methods and /or cell and molecular biology are needed. During the project, the Doctoral Researcher will acquire comprehensive knowledge and experience in microbiological and molecular biology methods, as well as dissemination of research findings e.g. in the form of scientific publications and seminar presentations. 

Qualifications we are looking for

You are the person we are looking for if you have 

  1. Master’s degree, or be about to obtain Master’s degree, in a relevant field
  2. Experience in microbiology (working with phages or other viruses) and/or cell culture
  3. Capability of conducting independent research, solid in English language and scientific writing

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of a Doctoral Researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The MSc degree required for the position must have been completed before starting the position. Doctoral Researcher needs to be also enrolled in the doctoral programme which can be applied from the Faculty of Mathematics and Science after selection for the position.

The annual salary for a Doctoral Researcher will be approximately 28,000 EUR (gross income, including holiday bonus). With progress of the thesis work, the salary will be revised in accordance with the Collective Agreement of Finnish Universities. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.
