The tenure track position in biosensor technology is a part of the faculty’s biomedical engineering profiling area with applications e.g. on cell and tissue engineering and microphysiological systems. Those are the core areas for example in the Science Mimicking Life Research Center and in the Academy of Finland’s Center of Excellence on Body-on-Chip Research

Biosensor technology is defined as technology that uses biological components for sensing applications. For this position, we use a wider scope of biosensors and we welcome all candidates with ambition to develop novel sensing technologies with applications on biomedical field, especially on molecular biology or cell and tissue engineering applications.

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) is dedicated to pursuing world-class research and delivering high-quality education in the fields of biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine, and health technology. We conduct basic, applied, as well as clinical research in collaboration with Tampere University Hospital (TAYS). Thus, the environment is strongly built also to conduct translational research. Strong existing research areas in health research include biomedical engineering fields from biomaterials and microtechnologies to health data science, cell, and molecular biology with applications for example in cancer, cardiovascular and celiac diseases, and immunology.

Job description

We are seeking highly motivated applicants with a track-record of internationally competitive research in biosensor technology.

We are interested in hiring an Associate Professor or Professor in Biosensor Technology, but welcome applications in all areas of measurement technology aiming for biomedical applications. Thus, for this position, we have a broad view and welcome candidates having expertise on biosensors as well as candidates having expertise on sensors for biology. We especially encourage candidates having expertise on sensor technology development, where the application areas include in-vitro cell and tissue models and point-of-care devices, to apply.  

You will be expected to pursue and supervise scientific research in your topic area at the highest level. Active collaboration with local, national, and global research partners, as well as with clinical stakeholders and industry is encouraged. You will be expected to secure substantial external funding for your research program as well as nurture interactions with relevant stakeholders for societal impact. In line with your own expertise, you will also contribute to development of degree education on biosensor technology as a part of our degree programme in in Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering. Our teaching language is predominantly English.

Requirements

You should have a doctoral degree (e.g. biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, measurement technology or biochemistry) and postdoctoral training in an area relevant for pursuing tenure track career in the field of biosensing and biomeasurements. Teaching experience will be favorably considered.  

Associate Professor qualification requirements: 

  • applicable doctoral degree 
  • track record of independent scholarly activity
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position
  • proven ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding  

For the Professor position, we require:

  • applicable doctoral degree 
  • high-level scholarly expertise including track record of international scholarly activity
  •  experience of leading scientific research
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction 
  • track record of winning external research funding

For the appointment for Associate Professor, we offer an initial for five years. Subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured member of the Faculty staff at the end of the first five-year period.  Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. 

You will be well-supported throughout the five-year period to ease transition to a tenured position. Salaries are based on a combination of job requirements and employees’ personal performance, in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for an Associate Professor is approximately 4700 - 5500 EUR/month and for a Professor approximately 5900 - 6600 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be agreed dependent upon experience and/or performance. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

Candidates may be invited for a video interview during the recruitment process and may also be invited for an in-person visit at a later stage, that may include an aptitude assessment. They will also undergo a review by external experts and, for applicants at Associate professor level, may be required to give a demonstration of their teaching skills.

Tehtävä sijoittuu Lääketieteen ja terveysteknologian tiedekuntaan, jossa yhdistyvät biolääketieteen tekniikan, biotieteiden ja kliinisen lääketieteen osaaminen. Tiedekunta on erittäin vahva solu- ja kudosmallien osaamisen keskittymä ja tiedekunnassa toimivat muun muassa Suomen Akatemian rahoittamat Monikudosmallintamisen huippuyksikkö, Syöpägenetiikan huippuyksikkö ja terveyden datatieteen profiloitumisalue sekä in vitro -mallien validoinnin ja toksikogenomiikan tutkimusyksikkö FHAIVE.
