The University of Jyväskylä (JYU), Finland, invites applications for the JYU Visiting Fellow Programme, which supports researchers with a doctoral degree, who are from outside Finland, to visit the JYU for one (30 days) to three months (90 days) in 2023.

The aim of the JYU Visiting Fellow Programme is to strengthen University’s global engagement and strategic collaboration with international partners. The main emphasis of the programme is in research collaboration, but the Visiting Fellows are also invited to participate in educational activities at the JYU.

The thematic emphasis of the JYU Visiting Fellows Programme is on the strategic core fields of research at the University:

  • Basic natural phenomena and mathematical thinking
  • Information technology and the human in the knowledge society
  • Language, culture and society
  • Learning, teaching and interaction
  • Physical activity, health and wellbeing
  • Sustainable business and economics

Eligibility

The JYU Visiting Fellow Programme is intended for researchers with a doctoral degree, who are based outside of Finland and will be hosted by one or more JYU researchers. The applicant should have an excellent track record in conducting and publishing scientific research and establishing international networks and be able to work fully in English.

The applicant is expected to contact a potential host at one of the faculties or departments of the University of Jyväskylä before submitting the application to discuss possible collaboration and define joint research themes. A JYU researcher can host one Visiting Fellow during 2023. An invitation letter from the JYU host is required for the application. Without this, the application will not be considered. Both the applicant and her/his host must be committed to the schedule of the planned visit and shall inform the host department/faculty of the visit and its schedule.

The collaboration may be, for example

  • Research in the context of a joint project, including the preparing research articles and papers
  • Research conducted at a laboratory, in the field or utilizing research data of the hosts at the JYU
  • Preparation of future research plans and funding applications

Selection criteria

Applications will be evaluated according to selection criteria that examines

  • Scientific quality of the applicant’s research and research plan
  • The research plan’s connection to the strategic core field of research at the JYU and the research interests of the host department or faculty
  • Interdisciplinarity, versatile methodological expertise, merits in establishing international research collaboration

The decisions of the Visiting Fellow Programme will be announced by the end of January 2023. The visiting period may start immediately after the decision has been made.

What the JYU Visiting Fellow Programme offers

A Visiting Fellow is paid a grant for a period of one (30 days) to three months (90 days) in 2023. If necessary, the visit may be divided into two periods. The amount of the grant depends on the career stage of the Visiting Fellow:

  • 3.000 euros/month for Postdoctoral Researchers
  • 4.500 euros/month for Associate Professors (or equivalent)
  • 5.500 euros/month for Professors (or equivalent)

The grant is intended to cover costs related to the visit at the JYU such as travel expenses to and from Jyväskylä and accommodation expenses in the University's guest apartments (www.jyu.fi/en/university-services/guest-apartments) or in a flat from the open housing market (www.jyu.fi/en/workwithus/international-staff-guide/living/eu-nordic/housing). Thus, travel and accommodation costs are not reimbursed separately. We kindly ask the Visiting Fellows to make travel and accommodation arrangements by themselves.

A Visiting Fellow will be part of our international and multidisciplinary university community focusing on high-level teaching, learning, research, and innovation. Before applying, contact a JYU researcher, who will act as a host during your stay at the University. To apply, please fill in the online application form and submit it along with the attachments by Friday, 16 December 2022 at 16.15 (GMT+2).

Obligatory attachments

  • Curriculum Vitae, composed according to good scientific practice and considering the template for researcher´s curriculum vitae by the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity (tenk.fi/en/advice-and-materials/template-researchers-curriculum-vitae)
  • List of publications (indicate the 10 most relevant or most cited publications)
  • Brief research plan, including a description of how your research is connected to one of the strategic core fields of research at the JYU
  • Free-form invitation letter from your JYU host (for example, an e-mail exchange)

Please be prepared to answer e.g., the following questions in the online application form

  • Year of doctoral degree certificate
  • Title: postdoctoral researcher, associate professor, or full professor
  • The planned dates and duration of your visit
  • Your strengths related to the position
