Postdoctoral researcher position on avian movement and dispersal ecology at the University of Turku

Postdoctoral researcher position for the period 1.1.-31.5.2023. The period is initially short-term, because there are change negotiations going on at the University of Turku at the moment. It is likely that the position will continue after May 2023 until 31.12.2024.

We are searching for a postdoctoral researcher to join us in studying animal movement and dispersal ecology. In this project, the main theme is the nexus between migratory navigation, habitat selection, search behavior and the ecological factors affecting dispersal in birds. The main study species is the pied flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca, a long-distance migratory passerine. It is a good model system for this work because there are suitable long-term data available and it is easy to carry out behavioral experiments with this species.

As a postdoctoral researcher in this project, you are expected to analyse existing data, to lead a field experiment, and to lead writing of papers from these data. Details of the project plan can be tailored according to your interests and experience. Our group works on the same topics within other study systems, and there are many possibilities for the successful applicant to engage in those projects and initiate collaborations. We also expect participation in teaching and supervision of undergraduate and PhD students in this field of research.

The main selection criteria are experience and demonstrated ability to publish high-quality science in this field, ability to collaborate but also work independently, and motivation. Previous experience with analysis of movement or other behavioral data is an asset.

A person selected for the position of postdoctoral researcher must possess a doctoral degree in biology or related discipline.

You will be situated in the Animal Ecology group (PI Professor Toni Laaksonen) at University of Turku. The work group consists of several postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. The research environment is the Department of Biology that has several excellent scientists working on behavior and population ecology of birds and other taxa. The vivid international environment, helpful atmosphere and group activities are supportive for the project.

Salary

The salary for the position is determined in accordance with the university salary system for research personnel. For the postdoctoral researcher salary follows the levels 5-6 of teaching and research staff (3044,00-3549,72 EUR/month). In addition, a personal work performance component will be paid. The personal work performance component is 6-50% of the task specific salary component. The starting salary is ca. 3500-3600€.

The position has two-month probation period.
