Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our universities community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en

The research group of Electromechanics at the Electrical Engineering Unit at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University focuses on numerical electromagnetics, magnetic materials, and superconducting magnets. The superconducting magnet development positions at interface of electromagnetic theory, thermodynamics, computational science, and engineering design of applications of practical importance. Our vision is to integrate optimized computer modeling tools together with creative engineering design approaches and work together with the international scientific community to advance the adoption of superconducting technologies in different sectors of science, health, and greener energy.

Job description

We have opened a researcher position in the superconducting magnet design team within the research group of Electromechanics. The goal is to start the employment in January or as mutually agreed. Quick start is the preference. A fixed term contract will be made until 31.8.2023.

The work will focus on developing experimental practices for designing, winding, and testing high-temperature superconducting (HTS) coils. The work includes planning, designing, and performing experiments together with the other team members. The underlying goal of the research is to better understand the HTS conductor and magnet behavior and to tests novel ideas for improving the reliability of the technology for future practical applications such as particle accelerator magnets or electric power applications.

The position is well suited for an R&D&I minded engineer/scientist who has a relatively careful and systematic way of working and resources for creative approaches to technical problem-solving. The exact content of the work can be adjusted based on the background and interests of the successful candidate.

  • Requirements
    • MSc electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or in other suitable area
    • Experience with laboratory work in a relevant area
    • Demonstrated proficiency in electromagnetics and thermal physics
    • Fluent oral and written communication in English
  • We appreciate
    • Experience with superconducting magnets or other cryogenic applications
    • Skills related to data analysis, programming or multiphysics simulations
    • Availability to start working at 1.1.2023 or sooner
    • good command of the Finnish language

We offer

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period till 31.8.2022. The goal is to start the employment in January or as mutually agreed. Quick start is the preference. A trial period will be applied to all our new employees and in this case, it is a half of the duration of the contract.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Researcher is placed on level 2—4 of the job requirements scale.
