a Senior Lecturer (research emphasis) in Contemporary Culture Studies, fromMarch 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter, until 31st December 2025. 

The research focused position will be located in the discipline of contemporary culture studies and related to the Centre of Excellence in Game Culture Studies. At the University of Jyväskylä, contemporary culture studies has a strong take on digital media culture and, especially, game cultures. The position of the Senior Lecturer emphasizes the research area Meaning and Form of Games, and research will focus especially on interpretation of games and game philosophy. Expertise on the methodology of game research and the game history are considered as an asset. 

Tasks and qualifications 

The Senior Lecturer is required to have strong research skills for conducting high-quality scientific game and game cultures research, significantly contributing to the research activities in the CoE in Game Culture Studies and the discipline. There is also a strong expectation of the Senior Lecturer to plan and lead new external funding project applications. The duties also include mentoring junior researchers, supervising PhD theses, tasks in the university community, societal impact and teaching in the Master and Bachelor levels. The position requires the ability to work effectively in the multidisciplinary scientific community of the department. 

The candidate is required to have a doctoral degree in a cultural studies or other, relevant area, evidence of academic research work in the fields described above, the ability to provide high-quality research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. Experience of multidisciplinary research in the field on cultural studies is considered as a strength. 

The work of the Senior lecturer is mainly conducted in an international setting, where academic English skills are needed. Especially the societal impact area covers such regional collaborations, where Finnish is also needed. We value the success in obtaining research funding and experience in societal impact. In addition, university pedagogical studies and having interest in developing the research field of meaning and form of games are considered in the assessment. 

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of a Senior Lecturer are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines.

The Senior Lecturer’s salary is situated on the job demands levels 5–7 according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. The annual salary range will be approximately 39.800-64.500 EUR (gross income, including holiday bonus), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.  

A trial period of six months will be used at the beginning of the employment.
