Aalto University School of Engineering invites applications for MASTER THESIS WORKER FOR DEVELOPMENT OF HARDWARE AND CONTROL IN AUTONOMOUS SHIP MODEL

We are looking for candidate students interested in developing her/his Master thesis in the field interconnected to autonomous ships technologies. The position is within the Research group on Safe and Efficient Marine Systems and Experience at the Department of Mechanical Engineering (Marine and Arctic Technology). Autonomous ship technologies exercise a tremendous influence over the area of maritime engineering research, business, technologies, and education. In Aalto Marine and Arctic Technology, this has created active research on the development of autonomous technologies, their risk investigation and investigation of the impact of autonomous technologies on the maritime industry.

We are looking for a master thesis worker who can execute research and develop her/his master thesis in the following area: “Development of hardware and control in autonomous ship model”. The work is developed as part of the project funded by Merenkulunsäätiö, ECAMARIS and Gyroscope. The thesis includes tasks related to integration of procured hardware components, integration of developed software control solutions, and implementation of series of tests with focus on safety in Aalto Ice and Towing Tank.

The call is open for candidates with a background in Naval Architecture, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Skills such as good knowledge of Autodesk 360, Arduino, ROS, Linux and PID controllers is considered as a strong advantage. Knowledge of ship manoeuvrability and relevant control methods is highly appreciated, but not necessary.

Employment

The position is at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the expected duration of work contract is six months. The salary is according to the salary system of Aalto University.
