Faculty of Humanities, University of Turku invites applications for a position of University Lecturer in English in the School of Languages and Translation Studies, Department of English, commencing 1 August 2023 for the time being.

 

The School of Languages and Translation Studies (SLTS) is an international teaching and research centre that trains various types of experts in languages, cultures and communication, such as teachers, translators, language experts and researchers.  We excel in teaching and research collaboration.

The Department of English is part of the School of Languages and Translation Studies. The areas of strength of the Department of English are discourse linguistics, historical linguistics and philology, postcolonial literary studies, second language acquisition, and translation studies.

The position of University Lecturer

In accordance with the university research career model, the position of University Lecturer is a third stage career position. The qualification requirements of the position are described in the University of Turku Rules of Procedure.

Teaching in the position has included the responsibilities of both translation and linguistics, including teaching Master's level translation courses and authorized translation. The degree program focuses on working life-oriented teaching in translation workshops and researching education. One area of specialization in teaching and research is working-life oriented audiovisual translation.

The position of University Lecturer entails

-          teaching in English language studies and translation studies and potentially in English linguistics, e.g., teaching in translation courses on the Masters level, English academic writing skills teaching, and teaching in spoken and written English language skills

-          theses supervision

-          independent scientific research

-          acquiring external research funding

-          study advising

-          developing the studies and research

-          student admission duties

-          administrative duties

What we expect

In accordance to the eligibility criteria for University Lecturer, the applicant should have

-          a relevant PhD degree

-          the ability to give high-quality university level teaching

-          the ability to supervise theses

 

Successful performance in the position requires

-          excellent proficiency in English

-          experience in university level of teaching in English as major subject

-          proven record of high-quality research-based teaching in English language studies and translation studies

-          good interaction skills

 

Good proficiency in Finnish is required.

 

When assessing the merits of the applicants we consider

-          the quality of scientific work (publications, external research funding)

-          expertise in the field in question

-          teaching experience

-          pedagogical education

-          ability to produce study materials

-          other teaching merits

-          possible previous teaching demonstrations

Salary and trial period

The salary is in accordance with the universities’ salary system for teaching and research personnel. The work-specific salary component is on the job demands assessment levels 5–7. There is an additional component based on personal performance that is typically 6–17% at the beginning of contract. The salary for the position depends on prior experience and qualifications, and will in the beginning of the employment be approximately 3,226–4,789 €/month.

The trial period will be six months.
