The University of Turku is a world-class multidisciplinary research university which offers interesting challenges and a unique vantage point to national and international research and education.

We are looking for an Assistant / Associate Professor (tenure track) in Pharmacology and Drug Development.

Depending on the previous academic merits, the successful applicant may be appointed to a fixed-term associate/assistant professorship (tenure track) as:

- Assistant Professor (I phase) is a fixed-term employment period of three to five years or
- Associate Professor (II phase) is a fixed-term employment period of two to four years.

The Faculty of Medicine is a high-level, international and innovative research and educational organisation in biomedical and clinical research, dental science, health and nursing science. The spearheads of Faculty of Medicine research are diagnostics, drug development and imaging. The Faculty provides multidisciplinary research-based degree education in degree programmes. Campus in Turku has several research centers and platforms, as well as excellent research infrastructure including several service core units. Faculty provides open access and joint use of research infrastructures with academic players as well as with industry. It is a part of the unique health innovation ecosystem in Turku, which brings together four higher educational institutions, hospital district and approximately 100 bio and pharma companies.

Duties of the Assistant/Associate Professor
The duties of the Assistant/Associate Professor are to carry out and supervise scholarly work, to provide education based on it and to keep abreast of academic developments, as well as to participate in societal interaction and international cooperation in his or her field. The position includes carrying out high quality research in the field of pharmacology and drug development, establishing and leading a research group, creating and maintaining international connections. As far as training is concerned, it is the duty of the Assistant/Associate Professor to teach undergraduate students, postgraduate students (in PhD programmes) and the students of continuing and specialist education. The task includes in particular the planning and development of teaching and curricula in the field of pharmacology and drug development. In the future, the Assistant/Associate professor also acts as a programme leader of the international Master’s Degree Programme in Biomedical Sciences: Drug Discovery and Development. The emphasis is, however, on research-related tasks.

Formal qualifications
For the position of Assistant Professor (I phase), we seek highly talented and already merited researchers beyond their post doc phase yet still at their early academic career. Candidates for Associate professorship (II phase) will have a distinguished academic career and an established international reputation in their fields, as well as an excellent publications record and success in acquiring external research funding.

The requirements for the individual to be appointed as an Assistant/Associate Professor are a doctoral degree in the appropriate area, high-level academic competence, experience of managing academic research, experience of international cooperation in his/her research field, as well as the ability to provide high-level research-based education and to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate theses.  

Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate training and supervising the thesis as well as pedagogical education and active participation in the development of university education are considered to be of benefit to the applicant.

In order to manage the post successfully it also requires an adequate knowledge of teaching and research work in the field pharmacology and drug development. Practical experience in the pharmaceutical industry or service-sector companies in the area is considered to be of benefit to the applicant.

It is possible to connect a part-time affiliation to the post of the Assistant/Associate professor containing clinical work in Turku University hospital.

Salary
The salary is determined in accordance with the university’s salary system for teaching and research personnel. The salary of the Assistant/Associate professor will be on a level 7 on the job demands’ chart, where the task specific salary component is 4092,29 euros per month. In addition, a personal work performance component (6-50 % of the task specific salary) will be paid.

The position has a six-month trial period.
