Aalto University is a community of bold thinkers where science and art meet technology and business. We are committed to identifying and solving grand societal challenges and building an innovative future. Aalto has six schools with nearly 11 000 students and a staff of more than 4000, of which 400 are professors. Our campuses are located in Espoo and Helsinki, Finland.

The School of Electrical Engineering is one of the six schools of Aalto University. Our portfolio covers fields from natural sciences to engineering and information sciences. In parallel with basic research, we develop ideas and technologies further into innovations and services. We are experts in photonics, electronics and radio communications and radar systems; we develop enabling and groundbreaking solutions for smart living environments and cities. The school is an international unit with close to 60 professors and 2 000 full-time students, including over 200 doctoral students.

The Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering at the Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering is looking for a Staff Scientist in the field of Photonics at the Micronova research facilities.

Staff Scientist in Photonics

Are you motivated to work with ambitious research groups and frontier projects in photonics? We offer you a unique opportunity to work in large collaborative, cutting-edge research projects like EU and Academy of Finland flagship projects and ERC projects.

Research environment
The Department´s research groups in photonics, optoelectronics, nanosciences and advanced materials, micro and quantum systems, electron physics and organic electronics are located in the Micronova research center. The Micronova research center houses the largest academic cleanroom facility (2600 m2) in Northern Europe. Aalto University shares this joint facility and provides access to over 100 production and measurement equipment for research and innovation. Micronova supports the research of over 200 researchers who carry out research in a number of fields such as quantum technologies, photonics, renewable energy and microsystems to name just a few.

Professor Zhipei Sun focuses on various nanomaterials (including two-dimensional materials) based nonlinear optics, THz photonics and quantum photonics. The recent breakthroughs of the group include ultra-high on-chip optical gain (Nat.Comm.10,432 (2019)), the first graphene actively mode-locked laser (Nat.Phot.10,227 (2016); Adv.Func.Mater. 1801539 (2018)), and giant optical nonlinearity in 2D materials (Nat.Comm.8,893 (2017); Adv.Matter.1705963 (2018)).

Your role and goals
The Staff Scientist position is for an academic faculty member who is specialist in research work connected essentially to the use and development of photonics infrastructures and equipment. The expected distribution of working hours is 50% research and teaching (e.g. thesis instruction) and 50% service (e.g. project management duties, technical support).

Your responsibilities will include:
• Coordination of major projects e.g., Finland PREIN photonics flagship, Academy of Centre of Excellence on quantum technology, EU quantum flagship, ERC projects.
• Performing demanding specific research in the photonics laboratories
• Providing technical maintenance, training and development of the photonics laboratories e.g. lasers, cryostation, THz system and quantum measurement systems.
• Thesis instruction

Your experience and ambitions
You have a doctoral degree in a relevant field and demonstrated evidence of successful research work shown by a strong scientific publication record. Your research experience is in the field of photonics, e.g. in lasers, nonlinear optics, ultrafast photonics, nanophotonics or quantum photonics. The coordinator´s role in challenging, large projects motivates you and you have already strong experience in project management activities. Practical experience in teaching responsibilities, for example lab work assistance or BSc / MSc theses instruction, is an asset. The following will be considered as additional merits for the position:
• Experience in international collaboration
• Experience in project management and other duties at group / Department / University level
• Proven track record of acquiring competitive funding

Salary and contract terms
The Staff Scientist position will be initially filled for 3 years, with a possibility to a permanent contract depending on the funding situation and performance evaluation. The expected starting salary is 4000–4500 €/month, depending on experience and qualifications, and it will increase with responsibilities and performance over time. The contract includes occupational health and social security benefits. The planned starting is in the autumn of 2019, but can also be negotiated.
