Aalto University is a community of bold thinkers where science and art meet technology and business. We are committed to identifying and solving grand societal challenges and building an innovative future. Aalto has six schools with nearly 11 000 students and a staff of more than 4000, of which 400 are professors. Our campuses are located in Espoo and Helsinki, Finland.

The School of Electrical Engineering is one of the six schools of Aalto University. Our portfolio covers fields from natural sciences to engineering and information sciences. In parallel with basic research, we develop ideas and technologies further into innovations and services. We are experts in systems science; we develop integrated solutions from care of the elderly to space robotics. The School is an international unit with close to 60 professors and 2 000 full-time students, including over 200 doctoral students.

The Antennas and Propagation group of Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering is looking for a highly motivated and talented MSc thesis worker to join the research work.

MSc thesis in Over-the-air Radio Link Performance Testing and Modeling for High-Mobility Vehicles

The fifth-generation (5G) cellular wireless will be ready before/around year 2020. The 5G cellular enables diverse new concepts of connected services in the society, one of which is for a high-mobility public transportation such as buses, trains and aircrafts. The connected vehicles through 5G radios allow seamless and real-time information sharing for vehicle operators and passengers aiming at increased safety, easiness of operational planning and passengers’ comfort. Before wide deployment of 5G radios for connected vehicles, field tests of the link connectivity are essential to understand their performance in real operational environments and, in case of link outage, possible reasons to them.

Job description
This Master’s thesis work tackles the above described problem by

1) Being able to use over-the-air link connectivity testbed emulating forthcoming 5G radios

2) Performing field tests of the link connectivity under operating conditions of real public transportation, and finally

3) Analyzing impacts of operating environments on the link connectivity.

The study will involve interaction with a Finnish industry committed for the development of connected public transportation.

Research group
Associate Professor Katsuyuki Haneda leads the Antennas and Propagation group, which has been involved into a number of EU FP7 and Horizon 2020 projects about 5G physical layer studies and hence is known internationally to scientific and industrial research communities. Applications of the developed knowledge and experimental facilities about 5G cellular to industries are one of the key research missions of the group.

Your experience and skills

We are looking for a student with

  • Basic knowledge of microwave engineering, including radio transceivers, wave propagation and antennas
  • Experience of radio frequency instrumentation and measurements, e.g., antennas and field tests

Advantageous is if you have

  • Physical layer 5G radio communications, especially millimeter-wave and multiple-input multiple-output radios
  • Experience of using and programming universal software-defined-radio peripherals
  • Basic knowledge of signal processing and experience of exercising them through computer programs, e.g., MATLAB or Labview

Salary and contract terms
The Master’s thesis position will be filled for six months. The salary is approximately 2280 €/month and the contract includes occupational health benefits, holiday bonus, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. Preferable starting time is the autumn of 2019.

How to apply
Please submit your application through our recruiting system by using the "Apply now!" link below. Please include the following documents in English:
• Course transcripts of master’s studies
• Curriculum Vitae (CV)
• Application letter (required for those who study outside Aalto, optional for those who study in Aalto)
• References (optional)

The application period closes on December 31, 2019 but we will start reviewing candidates immediately upon the receiving of the applications. Applications will be considered until the position is filled.
