We are looking for a Technical Communications (technical writing) trainee on our Tampere R&D site. Your home team will be the local Applications Engineering Technical Communications team in Nokia’s software development R&D, consisting of a group of senior technical communication experts. We welcome you to work as a junior team member in this team. Our team works in agile mode and in intense collaboration within the product R&D teams. Our source format is DITA XML, and we use the software development SCM tools (Git, SVN) for source file versioning and branching. We deliver HTML documentation embedded in the product. With us, you will have the opportunity to learn how to develop software user assistance in continuous delivery mode.


We are looking for a summer trainee/trainee with education in technical communication or English language. You have a background of some years of studying at a university. You have learned the basics of technical communication through your studies, including some hands-on experience during studies with the most common XML authoring tools. You are a team worker and team player, but also efficient on independent tasks. You have a hungry mind to learn more and you are excited about learning to do a variety of different kinds of tasks as part of your job. You might be interested or have skills also in web development and scripting languages, like VBA, JavaScript or Python; however these are not a key requirement. You are excited to be a member of our multicultural working environment.


Main Responsibility Areas:

  • You are a Trainee member of a team that takes end-to-end responsibility for creating customer documentation for selected Nokia product(s)

  • As a junior member of our team, you are given tasks in planning, designing, writing, updating and maintaining documents assigned to you

  • You may also be engaged into tasks in the area of, for example, information architecture, graphics editing, documentation tools maintenance, production automation, dependent on your skills.


Job Description:

Dependent on the project needs, in our team you will have the opportunity to learn to:

  • Cooperate with R&D teams in alignment with software development mode, to plan, design, write and update your documents in compliance with the Nokia tools, processes and quality standards

  • Send your documents for technical and language reviews upon agreed checkpoints; paying careful attention to good quality of your deliverables

  • Send your documents for quality assurance tests upon agreed program checkpoints and fix the defects within defined program schedule to ensure on-time delivery

  • Handle post-delivery defects according to required processes and standards

  • Understand your audiences: Develop and design user assistance to support and guide the users in completing their goals and to help them use the product(s) efficiently

  • Familiarize yourself and use the Nokia product(s) to understand the users’ need for customer documentation in the product context

  • Work with other technical writers, software developers, marketing, product verification, and training teams to complete and improve the documents.

  • Publish the documents for internal and external customers according to the Nokia process standards

  • Proactively initiate improvements or propose innovative solutions to make our deliverables better continuously

Through your studies and possible work experience you may have acquired some of the following skills:

  • Some experience through your studies in writing user assistance for software products; previous work experience is a plus

  • Excellent skills in the English language, with excellent writing skills and strong attention to detail

  • Ability to work well with others and communicate clearly in a collaborative work environment

  • Ability to gather and synthesize technical information

  • Strong work ethic, accountability, motivation

  • Basic understanding through your studies about information design concepts and working with an XML-based semantic markup language; previous work experience is a plus

  • Experience through your studies with XML authoring tools (Oxygen preferred). Experience with Eclipse user assistance and previous work experience are an asset

  • Understanding of the software development life cycles is an asset

  • Some knowledge about version control systems (e.g., Subversion) and defect-tracking systems (e.g. JIRA) is an asset

  • Familiarity with web technologies and scripting languages
