Professor in Physiology

Job Description and Location:

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oulu invites applications for a position as a Professor in Physiology belonging to the Research Unit of Biomedicine.

Focus areas of the Faculty of Medicine are molecular and environmental basis for lifelong health https://www.oulu.fi/medicine/research. Research related to fibrosis diseasome and digitalized solutions for future healthcare are the profiling themes in the field of health sciences in the University of Oulu https://www.oulu.fi/university/focusarea/molecular-and-environmental-basis-for-lifelong-health/profiling-areas.

The research groups in the Research Unit Biomedicine focus especially on cardiometabolic diseases, their molecular mechanisms, novel treatments and prevention (https://www.oulu.fi/medicine/biomedicine).

Responsibilities, Required Qualifications and Language Skills:

We are interested in applicants strengthening the research focus of the Research Unit of Biomedicine in the field of cardiometabolic physiology.

The professor will be a dynamic individual who provides vision, leadership, and guidance in the field of physiology. The successful applicant should have a strong background in research and teaching of cardiometabolic physiology. The duties of applicant are to be taking part in both undergraduate and postgraduate training.

Qualifications for successful candidate include a doctoral degree, high quality scientific competence, experience in supervising scientific research, ability to give high quality education based on research and additional pedagogic qualifications, supervision of doctoral theses, as well as evidence of international collaboration in his/her field of research and training (see section 33, Universities’ Act).

When assessing the applicant’s merits, issues taken into consideration include scientific publications, experience in postgraduate training and other research achievements, teaching experience, pedagogical training and other teaching merits. In addition, the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in acquiring domestic and international research funding, as well as international scientific experience and activities will be taken into consideration. 

The teaching language at the University of Oulu is Finnish. Teaching in Finnish is preferred but teaching in English is also possible.

Selection Procedure

Applications, together with all relevant enclosures, should be submitted using electronic application form bySeptember 2nd, 2019.

2)      List of publications classified as follows:

  A. Peer-reviewed scientific articles

      Original journal articles, review articles, literature reviews, systematic reviews, sections and chapters in scientific books.

B. Non-refereed scientific articles

      Non-refereed journal articles, book sections.

C. Publications intended for professional communities

      Articles in professional manuals or guides, textbook materials, professional conference proceedings, published development or research reports.

D. Patents and invention disclosures

At most ten (10) publications to the referees for assessment and to be taken into consideration upon evaluation of the eligibility and scientific merits. The applicant is required to indicate these 10 publications within his/her list of publication.

3)      Teaching merits of relevance to the position concerned are requested to be present in the form of a teaching portfolio and plan to develop teaching in physiology at the Medical Faculty at the University of Oulu in connection to the recommendations of Evaluation of undergraduate medical education in Finland (Mäkelä et al FINEEC 14; 2018; https://karvi.fi/app/uploads/2018/06/KARVI_1418.pdf).

  • Teaching strategies and methods
  • A personal background idea of teaching
  • Detailed practical experience in teaching and efforts to improve teaching
  • Description of educational material (curricula, handouts, assignments, workbooks)
  • Professional development as a teacher
  • Evaluation from teaching (student evaluations, peer evaluations, awards and assessed test lectures)
  • Plans for future directions of teaching in physiology at the University of Oulu

4)      Detailed summary of funding and possible transferrable funding. Please indicate in which the applicant is the principal investigator.

5)      Detailed list of supervised PhD students (shared or single supervision, please indicate the role as a supervisor, i.e., main or co-supervisor) with their work titles and the year of completion.

6)      Research plan with a special emphasis on how to develop the research focus of the Research Unit of Biomedicine (max 4 pages).

Recruiting committee and Reviewer assessment

The dean will nominate a recruiting committee for the evaluation process. Based on recommendations by the recruiting committee the research council of the university will appoint reviewers to be consulted regarding the selection process. The recruiting committee analyses the reviewers´ evaluations, interviews the suitable candidates and makes the proposal for appointment for the dean. The official nomination will be made by the vice rector for research.

Salary

The salary will be based on the levels 8 – 10 of the demand level chart for teaching and research personnel of the salary system of Finnish Universities. In addition to the basic salary, supplementary salary will be given for personal achievement and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 50 % of the basic salary level for the post.
