Aalto University is a community of bold thinkers where science and art meet technology and business. We are committed to identifying and solving grand societal challenges and building an innovative future. Aalto has six schools with nearly 11 000 students and a staff of more than 4000, of which 400 are professors. Our campuses are located in Espoo and Helsinki, Finland.

The School of Electrical Engineering is one of the six schools of Aalto University. Our portfolio covers fields from natural sciences to engineering and information sciences. In parallel with basic research, we develop ideas and technologies further into innovations and services. We are experts in systems science; we develop integrated solutions from care of the elderly to space robotics. The School is an international unit with close to 60 professors and 2 000 full-time students, including over 200 doctoral students.

The Antennas and Propagation group of Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering is looking for a highly motivated and talented MSc thesis worker to join the research work.

MSc thesis in Antenna Radome Design at 5G Base Stations

The fifth-generation (5G) cellular wireless will be ready before/around year 2020. Deployment of 5G radios require various practical components, among which is an antenna radome to protect antennas and radio devices at base stations from environmental disturbances such as rain, dust and animals. As the 5G cellular systems exploit a wide range of radio devices, more stringent performance requirements are imposed on antenna radomes for 5G base stations.

Job description
This Master’s thesis work tackles the above described problem by
1) Modeling and setting requirements of antenna radomes at 5G base stations
2) Designing the antenna radomes electronically, electromagnetically and mechanically to meet the requirements as much as possible and finally
3) Possibly fabricating the designed antenna radome and measuring the performance.

The study will involve interaction with a Finnish industry committed for the development of 5G base stations.

Research group
Associate Professor Katsuyuki Haneda leads the Antennas and Propagation group, which has been involved into a number of EU FP7 and Horizon 2020 projects about 5G physical layer studies and hence is known internationally to scientific and industrial research communities. Applications of the developed knowledge and experimental facilities about 5G cellular to industries are one of the key research missions of the group.

Your experience and skills
We are looking for a student with

  • Basic knowledge of microwave engineering, including radio wave propagation, microwave components and antennas
  • Experience of numerical simulations of passive radio frequency components and fields using, e.g., CST Microwave Studio and MATLAB

Advantageous is if you have

  • Experience of radio frequency instrumentation and measurements, e.g., antennas and field tests
  • Basic understanding of 5G cellular radio systems, e.g., the need of using millimeter-waves and transceiver architecture.

Salary and contract terms
The Master’s thesis position will be filled for six months. The salary is approximately 2280 €/month and the contract includes occupational health benefits, holiday bonus, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. Preferable starting time is the autumn of 2019.

How to apply
Please submit your application through our recruiting system by using the "Apply now!" link below. Please include the following documents in English:
• Course transcripts of master’s studies
• Curriculum Vitae (CV)
• Application letter (required for those who study outside Aalto, optional for those who study in Aalto)
• References (optional)

The application period closes on December 31, 2019 but we will start reviewing candidates immediately upon the receiving of the applications. Applications will be considered until the position is filled.
