The Faculty of Medicine promotes scientific research of a high standard and is responsible for providing research-based undergraduate and postgraduate education in medicine, dentistry, psychology and logopedics, as well as for the English-language Master’s Programme in Translational Medicine. The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of a part-time (35 %)

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR

The field of the position is clinical chemistry.

The position may be filled as assistant professor, associate professor or professor, depending on the candidates’ merits and career stage.

The professorship in clinical chemistry is associated with the position of chief physician in the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa. The professorship and the position of chief physician in the hospital district are filled through a simultaneous open application process. A separate application must be submitted for the position of chief physician in the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa in accordance with the hospital district’s instructions.

Qualifications for the position of assistant/associate professor
An appointee to the position of assistant professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means. When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience.

Qualifications for the position of professor
An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader. When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills. To ensure that the applicant’s ability to supervise theses and dissertations meets the requirements of the Faculty of Medicine, the applicant for the professorship must have completed the supervision of at least one doctoral dissertation.

The professor/associate professor/assistant professor will participate in/be responsible for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education in the field as well as practical small group teaching and the provision of lectures together with clinical instructors.

The duties also include carrying out and supervising scientific research in the relevant field, following developments in research and participating in community relations and Finnish and international cooperation in the field. In addition, the professor’s duties include other tasks assigned to the unit.

The practical experience required for the position can be demonstrated with a specialist‘s degree or licence in the field.

The salary will be based on level 7 (assistant professor) and levels 8-10 (professor) of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.

If the process for appointing the chief physician is cancelled or if the appointment committees of the Faculty and hospital district put forward differing proposals, the process for appointing the Faculty of Medicine professor/ associate/assistant professor will be cancelled.

If the appointee to the professorship/ associate /assistant professorship resigns from the position of chief physician in the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa, his or her employment contract with the University of Helsinki will also be terminated. The appointment to the position of chief physician is valid indefinitely, not exceeding the duration of employment in the professorship at the University of Helsinki.
