The Machine Listening Group is currently looking for a motivated and talented doctoral student to join the group. The topic of the work would be concerning sound event detection and classification using multiannotator noisy labels. The position is research focused; primary tasks include conducting research, algorithm design, software development, reading and writing scientific articles, presentation of the research results at international conferences and through journal publications. The hired candidate is expected to work towards completion of a PhD degree under the supervision of Assist. Prof. Annamaria Mesaros.

The Machine Listening Group is part of the Computing Sciences Unit at Tampere University, and part of the larger Audio Research Group. Its research focuses on content based analysis of environmental audio with an emphasis on natural language. This includes topics like acoustic scene and sound event classification and tagging, sound event detection, manual and automatic sound labeling. The Computing Sciences Unit at Tampere University is a diverse and international unit, with core areas of research in Signal Processing including image, video and audio signal processing and analysis, as well as machine learning related topics.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Doctoral Researcher's position will be filled for a fixed-term period of two years. There is a possibility of extension up to four years. The commencement date will be as soon as possible, as mutually agreed. The position will be located in the Tampere University Hervanta campus.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Master's degree or equivalent higher university degree
  • Background in signal processing (ideally audio), computer science and/or engineering, data science, or related areas
  • Good skills in scientific programming (preferably Python or Matlab)
  • Proficiency in English, both written and spoken

The following qualities are appreciated:

  • experience/courses taken in machine learning, and/or natural language processing
  • experience working with real data

The candidate is expected to apply for post-graduate studies at Tampere University (unless already a PhD student at the university). Also, the candidate must have the competence and motivation to successfully pursue postgraduate studies and complete a doctoral degree.

WE OFFER

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of maximum two (2) years. The starting date will be as soon as possible, as mutually agreed. A trial period of six (6) months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Doctoral Researcher is placed on level 2—4 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researcher is approximately 2300 EUR/month, increasing during the studies depending on the progress (up to 3100 EUR/month).

Konekuuloryhmä (Machine Listening Group)  etsii motivoitunutta ja etevää tohtoriopiskelijaa liittymään ryhmäänsä. Työn aihe tulee keskittymään äänitapahtumien tunnistamiseen ja luokitteluun käyttäen monen annotoijan luomaa kohinaista dataa. Tehtävä on tutkimuspainotteinen; ensisijaisesti tehtävä sisältää tutkimuksen tekemistä, algoritmikehitystä, ohjelmistokehitystä, tieteellisten artikkeleiden lukemista sekä kirjoittamista, ja tutkimustulosten esittämistä kansanvälisissä konferensseissa sekä tieteellisinä lehtiartikkeleina. Valittu hakija tulee työskentelemään kohti tohtorin tutkintoa tenure track-tutkija Annamaria Mesaroksen ohjauksessa.

Konekuuloryhmä on osa tietotekniikan yksikköä Tampereen yliopistolla, ja osa laajempaa audion tutkimustryhmää (Audio Research Group). Ryhmän tutkimus keskittyy ympäristöäänien sisältöpohjaiseen analyysiin keskittyen luonnolliseen kieleen. Tämä sisältää tutkimusaiheita kuten akustisen maiseman ja äänitapahtuminen luokittelu, äänitapahtumien tunnistus, sekä manuaalinen ja automaattinen äänen nimeäminen.

Tietotekniikan yksikkö Tampereen yliopistolla on monimuotoinen ja kansainvälinen yksikkö, jonka keskeiset tutkimusalueet signaalinkäsittelyssä ovat kuva-, video- ja audiosignaalien käsittely ja analyysi sekä koneoppimiseen liittyvät aiheet.
