For strengthening its focus, the University of Oulu announces tenure track Assistant Professor positionin analyzing and modeling of high-dimensional dynamic data for a highly talented individual who holds a doctoral degree and has excellent potential for a successful scientific career.

The tenure track position is placed at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (http://www.oulu.fi/itee). The Faculty is internationally attractive, with numerous visiting scholars and extensive international collaboration networks. The Research Units (https://www.oulu.fi/itee/units) and their leading experts are responsible for undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral education. The Assistant Professor will join an international and multidisciplinary research community of researchers from multiple faculties and disciplines that collaborates on new ubiquitous technologies and digital solutions.  

The position is aimed at strengthening the faculty as well as the Academy of Finland Profi 5 funded program HiDyn (Data Insight for High-Dimensional Dynamics) that is devoted to multidisciplinary data science and artificial intelligence, offering expertise to understand high-dimensional dynamic systems (see https://www.oulu.fi/university/focusarea/digital-solutions-in-sensing-and-interactions/profiling-areas).

More specifically, the position is directed to investigating revolutionary next generation methodologies relying on 6G wireless communications, and contributing to novel distributed applications. The particular focus areas of this position are multimodal emotional interfaces for human computer interfacing (HCI), 3-D computer vision, energy efficient embedded systems, biomedical signal analysis, and biometry.

The position will start as tenure track from April 1, 2020, or as soon as possible. The researcher appointed to a tenure track position may advance in the career through the tenure track process according to the principles of the University of Oulu https://www.oulu.fi/university/node/38379.  The position of an assistant professor is for persons who have recently (less than ten years ago) finished their doctoral dissertation and are advancing towards a professional research career.

The position will be supplemented with a recruitment package that enables hiring a post-doc or a post-graduate student. An option for a second post-graduate student is negotiable depending on the qualifications of the appointee.

Job Responsibilities and Required Qualifications: A person at any level of the academic tenure track system is expected to conduct outstanding world-class scientific research, to be competitive in attracting external funding, to publish in leading journals and conferences, to supervise doctoral students, to be an active member of the international scientific community, to create and teach related BSc and MSc level courses, and to exhibit academic leadership.

Required qualifications and career advancement at each level of the tenure track: Career advancement on the tenure track is based on performance assessments that measure the candidate’s merits.

The Assistant Professor position is initially a fixed-term position for three years, with the possibility of another three-year continuation period, or promotion to Associate Professor level dependent on evaluation. A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.  Being granted continuation for the position requires meeting the below-mentioned criteria as well as successful research work as indicated in the University of Oulu Tenure Track guidelines (https://www.oulu.fi/university/node/38379).

When appointing a person to the position of an Assistant Professor, the applicants are evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • publications on an international level: dissemination, quality of the publication forums, references to the publications
  • active role in the research training
  • acquisition of external funding
  • working in more than one research facility during one’s career (in most fields represented at the University of Oulu this signifies working abroad)
  • an active role in the international scientific community
  • acknowledgements and awards.

Salary: The salary of the appointed researcher will be based on the demand level 6 in the chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish Universities (see the top left table in https://www.sivista.fi/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/YPJ-ja-harkkarien_Palkkataulukot_010119_010419.pdf). In addition to the basic salary of the appropriate tenure track level, supplementary salary will be given for personal achievement and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 50 % of the basic salary level for the post. The salary range is roughly 3500 - 5000 €/month for an assistant professor.

Evaluators: The selection procedure will be carried out by an Appointment Committee according to the University of Oulu Tenure Track guidelines.
