Post-Doctoral Researcher in East Asian studies, especially contemporary China, a fixed-term position of January 1, 2020 – December 31, 2022

The position is hosted by the Department of Philosophy, Contemporary History and Political Science, the Centre for East Asian Studies.

The Centre for East Asian Studies (CEAS) is the only academic research center in Finland which focuses on researching East Asian contemporary societies from the perspective of social sciences. The Centre has research expertise especially in politics, sociology and contemporary history of the region.

The Post-Doctoral Researcher will engage in original scientific research on Chinese internet censorship and work as a team member in the Academy of Finland –funded project Security in China (SIC) jointly organized by the CEAS and the Faculty of Management and Business of the University of Tampere. The Post-Doctoral Researcher is expected to hold a PhD degree from a relevant field of study (e.g. Chinese or East Asian Studies or Political Science with demonstrated China-related research expertise), have ability to conduct independent research work and possess the pedagogical skills required by the position. Research familiarity with the Chinese internet is regarded as a merit in the application, as well as excellent knowledge of English and sufficient knowledge of Chinese for research purposes.

The position of a Post-Doctoral Researcher is primarily a research position, but it includes teaching duties at CEAS’s study programs, supervising CEAS’s doctoral theses, as well as some administrative duties concerning the SIC project, such as editing a volume based on the project, and engaging in societal outreach activities.

The salary will be determined in accordance with the Finnish university salary system for teaching and research personnel at levels 4-6 on the task-specific chart, between € 2 535,20 - 3 423,25 per month. In addition a performance component reflecting an evaluation of the position-holder’s personal achievement will be added. The personal performance component is a maximum of 6-50 % of the task-specific base salary.
