The Faculty of Pharmacy, Division of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, invites applications for the position of a

DOCTORAL STUDENT in the field of Medicinal Chemistry

The appointment is for 5 years, starting 1st of January 2020. The position will be filled with 6 months trial period.

We are looking for an applicant with a MSc degree in pharmacy or chemistry.

The position of the doctoral student will be located at the Division of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, Medicinal Chemistry Group. The main research focus of the Medicinal Chemistry Group is drug discovery by synthesizing new small molecular compounds.

The duties of a doctoral candidate are to work on her/his own doctoral thesis and to complete her/his postgraduate studies. The appointee for a doctoral student position must obtain the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Helsinki and approval by a suitable doctoral program. The duties also include other tasks and teaching pharmaceutical chemistry and organic chemistry to pharmacy students, requiring sufficient skills in the Finnish language. Teaching related duties will cover a maximum of 20 % of the total working hours.

Successful candidate is expected to have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team is also required. Previous experience in synthetic organic chemistry and drug discovery is considered a benefit. The research field of the PhD studies is medicinal chemistry.

The salary is based on the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of the Finnish universities. Doctoral students typically start from level 2 and advance to level 3, when the research work and studies have advanced according to the plan and the publication work has begun, and eventually to level 4, when the time to completing the thesis is about one year. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. In total, the starting salary of a doctoral student will be about 2200-2500 EUR per month. Standard Finnish pension benefits and occupational health care are provided for university employees.
