It is one of the leading multidisciplinary research universities and ranks among the top 100 international universities in the world. We are an equal opportunity employer and offer an attractive and diverse workplace in an inspiring environment with a variety of development opportunities and benefits. www.helsinki.fi

The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences is Finland’s most high-profile and extensive hub of research and teaching in the field. The Faculty educates experts to meet the needs of universities, research institutes, government, schools and the business sector. The Faculty is comprised of three units or research programmes: Ecosystems and Environment, Organismal and Evolutionary Biology, and Molecular and Integrative Biosciences. https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-biological-and-environmental-sciences

Faculty of Biological and Environmental invites applications for the position of

ASSISTANT / ASSOCIATE / FULL PROFESSOR IN GENOMICS-BASED PLANT SCIENCES

The selected applicant will be appointed to a fixed-term assistant / associate professorship (tenure track) / full professorship depending on their qualifications and career stage. The tenure track position is expected to lead to full professorship after evaluation.

We seek an internationally competitive researcher with a strong academic track-record in plant biology to strengthen and expand research in the highly international research environment of the Organismal and Evolutionary Biology research programme (OEB), within the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences. We are particularly interested in candidates with a foundation at the gene and/or genome level and experience in other omics will be considered favourably. The appointee’s research efforts should focus on gene and genomes in plant individuals, populations or communities and to eventually clarify differences between species and their adaptation mechanisms in the changing environment.

This position is part of Thriving Nature, a new University initiative to understand biological resilience. Therefore, the appointee is expected to engage extensively in collaboration with other staff members to resolve, across biological levels, the mechanisms causing and regulating why some species show resilience to environmental change. Other positions being recruited in this initiative include ecological and evolutionary dynamics, ecological data sciences, translational plant science, and forest genomics and breeding. The selected candidate will join existing research groups in OEB with expertise in ecological statistics and bioinformatics, ecological and evolutionary genomics, evolutionary theory, evolutionary ecology, behavioural ecology, and plant sciences, and who work with a wide range of study animal, plant or fungal systems in natural, semi-natural and laboratory settings. The selected candidate is also expected to participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching and supervision.

Viikki Biocenters offer excellent facilities for molecular and experimental work including extensive research greenhouses, common garden and plant phenotyping facilities on campus as well as Viikki Plant Science Centre ViPS (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/viikki-plant-science-centre) and Viikki Research Farm (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/infrastructures/viikki-research-farm). In addition to the core facilities available at the Viikki Campus, the faculties also have research stations around the country and internationally (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/research-stations). Thriving Nature will also establish a BioData Analytics Unit to be based at Helsinki Institute of Life Sciences, HiLIFE (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/helsinki-institute-of-life-science) with four new staff scientists and IT infrastructure to assist the PIs in dealing with current big data challenges and provide off-the-shelf solutions for data analysis. The BioData Analytics Unit will also assist with the development of analysis methods as required by the new synergistic research enabled by this profiling action, which will be integrated with our other data analysis efforts, such as HiDATA (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/helsinki-centre-for-data-science).
