The Learning and Educational Technology (LET) Research Unit of the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Teacher Education, University of Oulu, Finland, has an open 3-year position for a postdoctoral researcher.  The position of a Postdoctoral Researcher requires an applicable doctoral degree, the ability to work independently and the teaching skills required in the position.

We’re looking for someone whose work reflects a strong emphasis on multimodal process data (e.g., physiological data, log data, video data and self-reports) and learning analytics grounded in the learning sciences (e.g., self-regulated learning, collaborative learning), including experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Understanding of learning processes based on current theories of learning
  • Learning process analytics
  • Applications of learning analytics in the context of technology-based learning environments and learning sciences 
  • Ability to work and/or supervise work on a MySQL database containing the project data, including, but not limited to, physiological data collected with Shimmer sensors.
  • Knowledge of Matlab and/or Python are a plus, to manipulate, process and analyze the data.

The position will be part of the Finnish Academy funded SHARP project, which aims to research socially shared regulation in collaborative learning groups and develop solutions to individuals’ and groups’ regulation in learning implementing multimodal methods. The multimodal data collection is conducted in Oulu University LeaF research infrastructure for multidisciplinary research on learning and interaction (https://www.oulu.fi/leaf-eng/). SHARP works with completely new technological solutions, digital tools and learning process data.

This is a unique opportunity for someone with a research focus on methodological issues that arise from the intersection of learning analytics and the learning sciences. We welcome applicants who have a doctoral degree, will and skill for multidisciplinary collaborative research, strong research orientation with high level publications and active involvement in the acquisition of research funding. The position is aimed to be filled as of January 1st, 2020. The employment is fixed-term until 31st December, 2022. The position is subject to a trial period of 6 months.

The salary will be set on levels 5 to 6 of the demand level for teaching and research staff in Finnish universities. In addition to the job-specific salary component, a personal work performance component is also paid amounting to not more than 50 % of the job-specific component.
