Postdoctoral researcher position in environmental microbiology (metagenomics/metatranscriptomics of peat microorganisms)

Work description

The Water, Energy and Environmental Engineering Research Unit, University of Oulu, is opening a 2-year position for a Postdoctoral Researcher for research on metagenomics and metatranscriptomics of microorganisms involved in arsenic and antimony turnover in peatlands. We are looking for a talented and motivated Postdoctoral Researcher aspiring to become a world-leading scientist. The selected applicant will work on research tasks in a project funded by the Academy of Finland (“Capturing the unknown microbial players and genes involved in the cycling of arsenic and antimony in Northern peatland soils”; PI Dr. Katharina Kujala). The tasks include fieldwork, metagenomic and -transcriptomic sequencing as well as bioinformatics. Requirements

  • PhD in Microbiology/Microbial Ecology/Environmental Microbiology or a related field
  • Broad understanding of microbial physiology and the interactions of microbes with the environment
  • Experience with microbiome related studies, DNA/RNA extraction, next generation sequencing, metagenomics and -transcriptomics
  • Bioinformatics experience (experience with large omic datasets is a plus)
  • Strong analytical and statistical skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Ability to work both independently and with different research groups

Salary

The salary is in accordance with the University salary system (for teaching and research personnel) level 5 of the demand level chart. In addition to the basic salary, supplementary salary will be given for personal achievement and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 50 % of the basic salary level for the post. Typical salary for a starting postdoctoral fellow is 3,300 €/month.

The duration of the position is 2 years, beginning on 1st of April 2020 (or as soon as possible thereafter). A six-month trial period will be effective in the beginning of the contract.
