We are now looking for

Doctoral Researcher in Machine Learning and Cybersecurity

to join us in the Biomimetics and Intelligent Systems Group (BISG) at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering.

BISG conducts internationally recognized multidisciplinary research in Data Analysis, Robotics, Secure Programming, and Bio-IT. The application areas of our research include optimization of industrial manufacturing processes, Industry 4.0, health and well-being systems, environmental monitoring with mobile robots, dependable Internet of Things (IoT), and seamless artificial-natural systems.

This doctoral researcher position is part of the DIAMOND project funded by the European Union and supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme.

About the job

As a doctoral researcher in the DIAMOND project, you will 

  • Establish data efficiency, data fusion, and cybersecurity at the core of the application solutions being developed in DIAMOND. 
  • Develop novel data-efficient ML and deep learning models for sensor/data fusion at the edge
  • Provide proactive spatiotemporal forecasting and decision-making for system-level solutions on the edge-cloud continuum.
  • Extend developed solutions to establish cybersecurity aspects and various forms/scenarios of attacks with methods to mitigate them. Create performance metrics with an example of an autonomous robotic perception and reasoning system in a physics-aware manner, with geometric constraints and prior knowledge
  •  Apply the combined framework to DIAMOND examples (e.g., UAV inspection, art transport) to demonstrate sectoral adaptability and transferability, with calibrated performance results in open access and open source programming format.
  • Visit other project partners as a seconded researcher to collaborate on research related to the project

You are also expected to demonstrate the following:

  • Experience in either Machine Learning or Cybersecurity, or preferably in both fields;
  • Skills in programming, mathematics, and statistics.

We also consider as a plus:

  • Finnish language skills
  • Experience in the fields of Machine Learning and Cybersecurity
  • Ability to work in a diverse and international group of researchers and experts

Salary

The position is fixed-term for 3 years (36 months), starting upon agreement.

The salary of the selected Doctoral researcher is in accordance with the guidelines of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie programmes and is paid monthly. The starting gross salary (before taxes) will be approximately 4200 € per month for full-time employment, including mobility allowance. In addition, the researchers are also entitled to family allowance (for a maximum of 27 months), if applicable. 

A 6-month trial period is applied to the position.
