As part of the Faculty of Science, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-science/faculty/mathematics-and-st...) is the biggest university department of mathematical sciences in Finland. It was the highest ranked in Finland, 16th in Europe, and 42nd globally on the Shanghai subject ranking in 2017.

The department is responsible for high-end research into mathematics and statistics on an international level, and academic education in mathematics based on that research. The focal areas of the research are inverse problems, analysis, logic, mathematical biology, mathematical physics, and biostatistics.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the Faculty of Science of the University of Helsinki invites applications for a

PROFESSOR OR ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN APPLIED MATHEMATICS conducting research on inverse problems.

The position is closely related to the Centre of Excellence in Inverse Modelling and Imaging. It is a research unit operating in several Finnish Universities and funded by the Academy of Finland. The center consists of pure and applied mathematicians and mathematically oriented scientists engaged in active collaboration. The methodological and theoretical focus areas include nonlinear partial differential equations, geometry, computational reconstruction methods and tomographic and wave imaging methods.

Position description

We are looking for a professor or associate/assistant professor to carry out and supervise scientific research, provide teaching based on it, follow developments in research and participate in societal interaction in his/her field and in international cooperation.

A successful applicant must have a strong track record in inverse problems research in a wide sense. The appointee is expected to conduct research on inverse problems on an internationally high level, and have experience on research in some of the areas of mathematics of inverse problems. These areas include, but are not limited to, inverse problems for partial differential equations or in geometry, statistical inversion, functional analytic regularization, and computational reconstruction methods. In addition to mathematical research, experience on applications such as medical imaging or imaging in Earth sciences is a strength.

The teaching area of the position is mathematics. In addition to conducting research and graduate and undergraduate teaching, the appointee must take advantage of national and international research funding opportunities, participate in doctoral education at the Department, and participate in the interaction between science and society at large.

Requirements

The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent full professorship or a fixed-term assistant/ associate professorship (tenure track), depending on his or her qualifications and career stage. A professor must hold a doctoral degree in Mathematics or other relevant field and have high-level academic qualifications and experience in leading scientific research. The professor must also be able to provide research-based teaching, supervise dissertations and theses as well as evidence of international cooperation in the field.

An assistant/associate professor must hold a doctoral degree in Mathematics or other relevant field and have demonstrated ability for independent scientific work as well as teaching skills to provide teaching in mathematics at undergraduate and graduate level and to participate in doctoral education. Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to have competence and motivation for scientific career proven by scientific publications and other academic activities.

When assessing the qualifications of each candidate, attention will be paid to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value as well as teaching experience. Furthermore, attention will be paid to the applicant's activities within the research community, success in obtaining research funding, research work abroad and activity in scientific organisations.

The annual gross salary for an assistant/associate professor amounts to 50,000 - 68,500 euros and for a full professor the typical salaries are within the range of 64,000 - 96,000 euros.
