Doctoral researcher (Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences)

Together, Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences form a higher education community that places faith in people and scientific knowledge. Leading experts in the fields of technology, health and society are changing the world at Finland’s second largest multidisciplinary higher education institution. www.tuni.fi/en

The Engineering Materials Science is part of Material Sciences and Environmental Engineering Unit within the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences of Tampere University. The research in the Engineering Materials Science unit (https://www.tuni.fi/en/about-us/engineering-materials-science) covers topics from metallic materials, ceramics, coatings, plastics, rubber materials, composites, fiber materials, materials characterization, tribology and paper converting and packaging technologies. The Materials Characterization research group (https://www.tuni.fi/en/research/materials-characterization) focuses on structural characterization of materials. The research interests are wide-ranging in the area of materials characterization, the main focus, being on materials microstructural characteristics and their relation on other material properties and on non-destructive material performance evaluation. Research on detailed microstructural characteristics of various materials is based on utilization of multi-scale characterization methods including electron microscopy with microanalysis and electron diffraction techniques and X-ray diffraction analysis. The group has active collaboration with industry, several national and international research organizations.

Job Description

The Material characterization research group is looking for a talented and highly motivated Doctoral Researcher to start in Spring 2020. The doctoral thesis work of the Doctoral Researcher is part of a research project funded by the Association of Finnish Steel and Metal Producers Fund. The research project is focused on management of residual stress state in additive manufactured complex shape steel components. Since additive manufactured stainless steel products are attractive choice for demanding environments, it is of interest to determine how they are behaving in such conditions compared to traditionally manufactured complex shape parts.

In the project, the candidate will focus on detailed characterization of additively manufactured samples with different methods. The duties of the Doctoral Researcher will include teaching, amounting to approximately 5% of their annual working hours, unless there are justified reasons to the contrary.

Requirements

The successful candidate must hold an applicable higher university degree in the field of materials science or mechanical engineering. The candidate must have the competence and motivation to pursue postgraduate studies in the field of materials science and engineering and complete a doctoral degree.
The successful candidate should be highly motivated in research activities. The candidate should have a background in materials science, mechanical engineering, or a related field. Experience in laboratory work, working with microscopes or material modelling and simulation skills are considered as a benefit.
A good knowledge of the English language (both written and spoken) is required.

Please also note that the position of Doctoral Researcher requires you to be admitted to post-graduate studies at Tampere University.
