VTT Summer Internships 2020; Research Trainees, MEMS fabrication

About us
Are you looking for a summer job with meaningful responsibility and possibility to make an impact? At VTT you have an opportunity to be part of our innovative work community of brilliant minds, and learn and develop with the support of your team mates. We have over 2000 encouraging and inspiring colleagues from 47 different nationalities waiting for you across Finland!
Our last summer’s trainees rated their summer job experience at 3,72 / 4 in Responsible Summer Job survey by Oikotie. Below are some excerpts of their feedback:
”I’ve been involved to versatile different projects and to different level of work tasks.”
”It was an eye opening experience to be part of various research projects.”
Join us and make an impact for a brighter future!
VTT MEMS team is developing several types of MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical-systems) sensors that are key components in the digitalization of environmental monitoring, health care, automated vehicles, next generation telecommunication etc. We are a multi-national group of experts working mainly in international research projects.
We are looking for several trainees for MEMS fabrication related topics. The list below is an example of possible positions. The exact number of trainees and job descriptions are elaborated during the recruitment process. Basic understanding of MEMS and semiconductor fabrication is expected. Good knowledge of either electronics, physics or chemistry is expected.
1. SOI wafer manufacturing
Development of silicon wafer edge shaping processes by etching and using a wafer dicing saw for special wafers and analyzing the compatibility of the results with the wafer process flow. In addition to the edge processing itself in the clean room environment, the work involves having detailed analysis made and interpreting the results with colleagues. The work will be well instructed. There is a possibility to continue work to a master's thesis and to extend one's expertise to other areas of wafer engineering.
2. DRIE - deep reactive ion etching
Learn to use the VTT`s silicon plasma etching tools and summarize the existing recipes or process capabilities. Participate to process development and documentation of etching methods and process modules exploiting DRIE
3. Vapour phase etching
Study of vapour phase etching methods (anhydrous hydrofluoric acid for silicon dioxide, Xenon difluoride for isotropic silicon etching) and utilization of those methods in few use cases in MEMS device fabrication.
Vapour phase etching can enable new material combinations in MEMS processing, especially new sacrificial layer etching options. During the course of work you will learn to use basic measurement, inspection and analysis methods.
4. Thin film technologies
Deposition (sputtering and/or atomic layer deposition) and analysis of thin films. You will learn the basics of thin film deposition and characterization methods. This task is related to process integration of optical MEMS devices and/or micromachined ultrasound devices.
In all topics there is a possibility to continue work to a master's thesis and to extend one's expertise to other areas of wafer engineering.
Basic understanding of MEMS and semiconductor fabrication is expected. Good knowledge of either electronics, physics or chemistry is expected. We are especially looking for enthusiastic minds with strong motivation to grow and develop.
self-driven and excited to learn new things and to strengthen your skills in the field of MEMS fabrication. You find it interesting to be part of the development in our international projects that aim for global markets.
VTT is a place to make a difference in collaboration with other brilliant minds. Our mission is to create impact that generates sustainable growth and wellbeing in society as well as in industry.
Our people are the core of the next generation VTT. Therefore, our personnel’s wellbeing, flexible work opportunities and competence development are key priorities for us.
With us, you can make an impact for a better future and you can be part of solving the biggest challenges of our time.
At VTT you also have an opportunity to continue working after your summer job as a part-time employee alongside of your studies or as a Thesis worker. According to Responsible Summer Job survey, 96 % of our summer interns were satisfied with their summer internship experience and 95 % were willing to continue working at VTT in the future.
