The Finnish Institute for Verification of the Chemical Weapons Convention (VERIFIN) is part of the Chemistry Department. VERIFIN institute (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/verifin-finnish-institute-for-verification-of...) operates in close contact with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, and is the National Authority for the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). VERIFIN supports the disarmament of chemical weapons by development of identification methods for chemical warfare agents (CWA) and organizes training courses for chemists in developing countries. The institute is an accredited testing laboratory (T073, ISO/IEC 17025) by the Finnish Accreditation Service (FINAS). VERIFIN is also one of the designated laboratories of the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for analysis of environmental and biomedical samples.

VERIFIN invites applications for a

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER

The appointment is for three years, starting October 1, 2020, with a six-month trial period, under the mentorship of Professor Gary Eiceman, in the GIDPROvis project (Gas Ion Distillation and Sequential Ion Processing Technologies for Identification and Visualization of Chemicals in Airborne Vapors) funded by the European Union.

The selected postdoctoral researcher will work as a part of an international, multidisciplinary team designing, building, and testing of novel technologies in the area of ion chemistry and spectrometry of gas ions.

Qualifications
We are seeking a candidate with a PhD preferably in instrumental physics, physical chemistry, or chemical engineering (other areas of chemistry also considered). Experience in mass spectrometry, gas phase ion chemistry, computational modelling, and ion dynamics are advantageous. Previous experience in design and construction of chemical instrumentation is desirable. The successful candidate will have a good command of spoken and written English, a capability to multitask and meet research schedules. Demonstrated teaming across disciplines and cultures is desirable.

Salary and benefits
The salary will be in accordance with the University salary system (for teaching and research personnel, level 5). In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary will be approximately 3300–3800 €/month.
