R&D Manager, Control Systems

Load & Haul Division’s Turku plant within Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology (SMRT) is a global technology and manufacturing center for underground loading & hauling equipment for mining industry. Today intelligent control system plays an essential and increasingly important role in safe and productive usage of mining equipment. R&D and Product Development organization is currently looking for a dynamic and innovative R&D Manager for Control Systems development. The position located in Turku, Finland.

Your mission

As R&D Manager for Control Systems, you are responsible for entire operations of the technology team; giving direction to technology development, roadmap creation, target setting, leading the operational engineering activities, capacity planning with budget for the team and development activities.

You will success in your work through the leading the team of subject matter experts in the area of machine control systems. Your team is working in close co-operation with the internal and external stakeholders of different technology areas. You are one of the key enablers of exceeding the customer expectations for current and future Load and Haul product offering.

The main responsibilities include the following:

• Co-ordinate future and current control systems development activities in R&D development projects/activities.
• Coach and develop the team through excellent leadership skills.
• Team budget and capacity planning with resourcing for projects and engineering activities.
• Sub-contracting engineering services in the area of control systems.
• Way of working development in the areas control systems to secure timely delivery and feedback.
• Follow-up of standards, requirements and new technology in the area of underground loaders and trucks.
• Ensure health and safety through promotion of safe work practices, training and compliance to safety policies.

Your character

You have a University degree in a related field, preferably a M.Sc. in technology and have a minimum of 8 years’ experience in specific engineering. We expect you to have also a proven record of leading an expert engineering team, as in this role you will lead highly skilled programmers, system engineers and software test engineers. Using your technical know-how and experience, you will largely influence on choosing the right programming technology and control electronics for each application. You also set the goals and drive the development of software test environment. In this role, you will be seeing several technologies such as C/C++, Python, Qt and different versions of CoDeSys development environment. It is an advantage if you have knowledge of mobile machinery with embedded CAN- based solutions and systems utilizing hydraulics and low-high voltage electrics.

Your fluent communication skills both in Finnish and English is mandatory requirement. Proactive and systematic way of working and excellent skills in problem solving will be needed. You can work under pressure in the multicultural stakeholder environment and you have capability to lead and develop the team to meet the current and future challenging targets.
