Food Chemistry and Food Development Unit at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Turku is an internationally oriented research team specialized in chemistry, biochemistry, sensory properties and health effects of foods as well as food development research based on Northern food resources. Lipid research is a key area of strength of our group with research projects covering structural analysis of lipid molecules, lipid oxidation, as well as metabolism and health effects of lipids in food. We are looking for a talented researcher to join our lipid research team. 

Project and tasks

 Blue Product Project is part of the Fish Innovation Programme, funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the European Fishery Funds. The aim of the Blue Product project is to develop innovative processes and product concepts to add value to fish species from the Baltic sea with special focus on Baltic herring (silakka) and roach (särkikala) as well as fish processing side streams. The Blue Product cooperation consortium includes researchers from University of Turku (UTU), VTT, Luke, and companies operating in the field of fishing and fish processing, coordinated by the Ostrobothnian Fisheries Association (Österbottens Fiskarförbund).

The research of UTU will focus on the extraction, purification, and food application of proteins and fish oil from Baltic fish species Baltic herring (silakka) and roach (särkikala) as well as fish processing side streams. The quality and storage stability of raw materials and products are also important research topics. The UTU team will cooperate closely with other members of the consortium and companies.

The expectation of competence

•  Suitable candidates should hold a Master`s degree or Doctoral degree in Food Sciences, Food Technology, Food Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry or related field.

• Expertise and previous experience in protein chemistry and technology and/or the other one in lipid chemistry and technology is highly appreciated.

•  Previous experience in Food Development research is a strongly plus.

Period of employment and salary levels

 The contract period will be 1-2 years depending on the levels and expertise of the candidates, starting time will be in early August-September, 2020.  

The salary is determined by the collective agreement system of Finnish universities. The position belongs to our research personnel and for a Post-Doctoral Researcher the salary will be 3100 - 3400 eur/month in average, and for a Project Researcher /Doctoral Candidate with MSc degree 2200 – 2700 eur/month in average.

Our selection criteria is based on the principle of finding the most qualified and suitable candidate for the work. In practice this means that not only education and working experience but also personal qualities, motivation factors, language skills  and other relevant criteria will be taken into account.
