As part of the Faculty of Science, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-science/faculty/mathematics-and-st...) is the biggest university department of mathematical sciences in Finland. The Department is responsible for high-end research into mathematics and statistics on an international level, and academic education in mathematics based on that research. The focus areas of the research are mathematical physics, analysis, logic, mathematical biology, inverse problems, and biostatistics.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics invites applications for a

SALARIED DOCTORAL STUDENT POSITION IN MATHEMATICS

to work in the Academy of Finland project "Critical phenomena in dimension two: analytic and probabilistic methods", under the supervision of Assistant Professor Konstantin Izyurov. The field of two-dimensional statistical mechanics has flourished in the past two decades, and University of Helsinki, with its world-class Analysis and Mathematical physics groups, will be an excellent environment for an early-career researcher. The focus of the research will be on establishing rigorous connections between lattice systems of two-dimensional Statistical mechanics and Conformal Field theory.

The earliest possible starting date for the position is September 2020. Strong candidates, who can only start later, will also be considered; however, the funding for the position expires in August 2024.

The successful applicant shall enroll in the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Statistics (DOMAST) at the Doctoral School of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Helsinki and is expected to work full time on the PhD thesis and to complete PhD thesis and the required studies in four years.

Requirements
Candidates must have completed an MSc degree or equivalent by the time they start the position and are expected to have a strong background in Probability and/or Mathematical Physics and/or Analysis.

The appointee must either already have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki by the start of the appointment, or apply for the right and obtain it within the probationary period of 6 months applied in the appointment. Salary and benefits
The salary will be based on level 2 of the demands level table for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary will be ca. 2300-2500 euros/month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
