Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our universities community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en

We are seeking a highly motivated Doctoral Researcher or Postdoctoral Research Fellow with a strong background in applied mathematics or signal processing to support our research team in developing advanced tomographic radar reconstruction methods with the emphasis on future space missions.

Tampere University’s  Hervanta Campus is currently Finland’s second-largest entity in engineering sciences, pursuing research and giving the highest education in its field. The research staff includes around 1.800 members, mostly focusing on applied sciences. The research group uses high-end workstation computers and TAU has state-of-the-art cluster computing resources.

The research will be supervised at Tampere by Associate Professor Sampsa Pursiainen, Computing Sciences, Tampere University, Tampere, Finland. SP is a team leader in the Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Inverse Modelling and Imaging 2018-2025 which has activities and a network covering several Finnish universities.

JOB DESCRIPTION

We aim to reconstructing the global permittivity structure of a given arbitrary laboratory analogue model using experimental data. This interface will be an essential tool with respect to the future space mission design involving radar tomography and also to achieve the scientific goals of such a mission. These opportunities will be anticipated by the planetary scientific community.

The research work will include the three following entities: (i) numerical forward and inverse modelling of radar signals, (ii) numerical modelling and 3D-printing of analogue scale models, as well as (iii) pre-processing and inversion of tomographic radar measurements. The work will be conducted in collaboration with Institute Fresnel, Aix-Marseille University, Marseille, France, and Institute for Planetary Sciences and Astrophysics, University of Grenoble Alpes, Grenoble, France. The research work will include mobility to these institutes which can participate in supervising the research.

The research work will involve the development of field propagation techniques for forward modelling, inversion routines based on classical and statistical regularization approaches potentially complemented with machine learning methods, e.g., in parameter selection, and also pre-processing techniques such as fast Fourier transforms, window functions, finite impulse response (FIR) filters, and independent component analysis (ICA) filters. The computations will be performed using high-performance workstations and supercomputing clusters equipped with graphics processing units (GPUs).

The planned software development can involve, for example, the following programs and platforms: (1) MATLAB (The MathWorks Incorporated) (2) Python, (3) C++, (4) CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture, NVIDIA), (5) GPUOpen HIP (C++ Heterogeneous-Compute Interface for Portability, AMD), (6) Gmsh (A three-dimensional finite element mesh generator with pre- and post-processing facilities).

REQUIREMENTS

Potential candidates for the now open position hold an M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree in a relevant discipline (applied mathematics, communications engineering, electrical engineering, signal processing) and are enthusiastic to learn and study one or more of these fields. We highly appreciate but do not necessitate previous experience of using and managing computers running the Linux Ubuntu operating system.

WE OFFER

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period (24 months for a Postdoctoral Researcher and 36 months for a Doctoral student). The starting date is at the earliest January 20th, 2021, and at the latest, March 1st, 2021. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. The typical starting salary for a Doctoral Researcher will be approximately 2380 EUR per month and for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow 3440 EUR per month.

Tampere University offers many benefits to its employees, e.g., occupational health services, flexible working hours, high-quality sport services and affordable lunch choices on campus. International HR services offer their help with the official issues in settling in Finland and Tampere. Tampere region is one of the fastest growing city areas in Finland. Tampere is the largest inland city in the Nordic countries and a traditional center of the Finnish industry. Today, the city is best known for its high-tech sector, with companies such as Nokia, Intel, Huawei, and Saab having research/development facilities here. Tampere has been selected several times as the most livable city in Finland and as the most popular city in Finland among students of higher education.

TEHTÄVÄ

Tavoitteenamme on rekonstruoida tietyn laboratoriomittakaavan analogisten mallien kolmiulotteinen rakenne kokeellisten sirontamittausten avulla. Sirontaan liittyvän matemaattisen ja laskennallisen käänteisongelman ratkaiseminen on edistynyttä sovellettua matematiikkaa, jonka on tarkoitus tukea erityisesti tulevien avaruusmissioiden tomografisten tutkimusten suunnittelua.

Työhön liittyvä ohjelmistokehitys voi sisältää esimerkiksi seuraavia ohjelmia ja alustoja: (1) MATLAB (The MathWorks Incorporated) (2) Python, (3) C ++, (4) CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture, NVIDIA), (5) ) GPUOpen HIP (C ++ Heterogeneous-Compute Interface for Portability, AMD), (6) Gmsh.
