Job Description

We are seeking new members to our computer vision and machine learning research. We offer several positions on levels of:

  • Masters thesis worker
  • PhD candidate
  • Postdoctoral researcher

The positions will offer excellent opportunities to work in a team of professionals responsible for developing cutting edge computer vision and machine learning technology, and allows you to learn many aspects from fundamental research problems to concrete applications.

These positions are part of a joint project with Nokia Technologies, where we develop machine learning approaches for video coding. In particular, we are interested in compression methods where the output is mainly aimed for machine consumption instead of humans. Such approaches are increasingly important due to the emerge of new computer vision based systems, e.g. in autonomous driving and robotics.

Requirements

We are especially seeking candidates with the following research interest:

  • Neural Network based video coding
  • Video Coding for machines

Ideal candidate has previous knowledge in machine learning, video or image coding, or computer vision. Experience in (or strong will to learn) programming with Python or C++/Java are considered as advantages.

Team

The research work at Tampere University will be supervised by the Assistant Professor Esa Rahtu. The application will also collaborate closely with the video coding team at Nokia Technologies in Tampere. We work broadly in the fields of computer vision and machine learning. We are pursuing research problems in geometric computer vision (including topics such as visual SLAM, visual-inertial odometry, and 3D scene reconstruction), in semantic computer vision (including topics such as image-based localization, object detection and recognition, and deep learning), video and image processing (compression), and statistical machine learning (Gaussian processes).
