Faculty of Humanities, University of Turku invites applications for the position of contract-based University Lecturer in English in the School of Languages and Translation Studies, Department of English, from 1 September 2023 until 31 May 2024.

The School of Languages and Translation Studies (SLTS) is an international teaching and research centre that trains various types of experts in languages, cultures and communication, such as teachers, translators, language experts and researchers.  We excel in teaching and research collaboration.

The Department of English is part of the School of Languages and Translation Studies. The areas of strength of the Department of English are discourse studies and linguistics, historical and philological studies of English, postcolonial literary studies, second language acquisition, and translation studies.

 

University Lecturer (English Linguistics)

In accordance with the university research career model, the position of University Lecturer is a third stage career position. The qualification requirements of the position are described in the University of Turku Rules of Procedure. Teaching in the position has included the responsibilities of courses related to discourse linguistics at the MA and BA levels.

 

The position of University Lecturer entails 

-          teaching in English discourse studies

-          MA theses supervision

-          independent scientific research

-          academic advising

-          participation in curriculum development

-          student admission duties

 

Requirements and qualifications

Candidates are required to have

-          a PhD in the field of English linguistics (preferably in a discourse analysis)

-          the ability to give high-quality university level teaching

-          the ability to supervise theses

 

Successful performance in the position requires

-          excellent proficiency in English

-          experience in university level of teaching in English as major subject

-          good interaction skills

 

When assessing the merits of the applicants we consider

-          the quality of scientific work (publications, success in securing research funding)

-          expertise in the field in question

-          teaching experience

-          pedagogical education

-          ability to produce study materials

-          other teaching merits

Salary and trial period

The salary is in accordance with the universities’ salary system for teaching and research personnel. The work-specific salary component is on the job demands assessment levels 5–7. There is an additional component based on personal performance that is typically 6–17% at the beginning of contract. The salary for the position depends on prior experience and qualifications, and will in the beginning of the employment be approximately 3,339–4,955 €/month. The salary level will be set when drafting the contract.

 

The trial period will be three months.
