Tampere University’s Laboratory for Future Electronics has open position for master’s thesis work. The laboratory investigates technologies and solutions related to devices, circuits, sensors, energy-autonomy, wearables, and system integration. Strong emphasis is placed on scalable, low-cost manufacturing methods such as printing as well as the integration of printed components and circuits with more conventional component assembly methods. 

The open Master’s thesis position is related to on-going ECOtronics project. ECOtronics academic-industry consortium supports renewal of Finnish electronics and optics industry, to increase export, and to support development of sustainable electronics and optics throughout their lifecycles. 

Job description

The work focuses on development and evaluation of environmentally friendly energy module to replace conventional batteries (e.g. coin cell or AAA batteries) in low-power indoor IoT-sensor systems. 

The tasks of the open position consist of electrical design, implementation, and testing of energy module. The work includes design of power management circuit, fabrication of supercapacitors by printing technologies, integration of energy source and storage unit, and performance characterization. The work will be carried out in close collaboration between consortium partners. Travelling in Finland may be required. 

Requirements

The position requires university studies in electronics or embedded systems. Additional studies in electronics materials are an advantage. The applicant should have completed majority of the Master’s studies. Good English language skills (oral and written) are considered essential. Ability to work, cooperate, and communicate in a team and to interact with our research partners is important.

Previous studies or practical experience in design of power management circuit, supercapacitors, batteries, working in laboratory, or printed electronics are an advantage. 

We offer

The job title is research assistant. The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System. The position of research assistant is placed on the job demand level 1 (the demand level chart for the teaching and research staff). In addition, employees will receive performance-based salary which for research assistants is based on their study credits. Salary for a research assistant is around 1980€ - 2290€ depending on completed study credits. 

The positions will have fixed-term contracts of 7- 8 months commencing on May 3, 2021, unless otherwise agreed. A trial period applies to all our new employees.

Future Electronics  -laboratorio etsii diplomityöntekijää kehittämään ympäristöystävällisempiä ratkaisuja korvaamaan perinteiset paristot. Tutkimus on osa käynnissä olevaa ECOtronics -projektia, jossa kehitetään ratkaisuja, jotka tukevat Suomen elektroniikkateollisuuden uudistumista.  

Tehtävänkuvaus

Tehtävä nimike on tutkimusapulainen. Tehtävä keskittyy pariston korvaavan energiamodulin suunnitteluun, toteutukseen ja testaamiseen sisätiloissa. Tehtävä koostuu elektroniikka suunnittelusta, superkondensaattorien valmistuksesta, superkondensaattorin ja energiakeräimen integroinnista ja suorituskyvyn testaamisesta. Työ tehdään läheisessä yhteistyössä tutkimuspartnereiden kanssa.
